What is the Welsh Grand National?

The Welsh Grand National is a Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is a handicap race run in Chepstow Wales with the next edition of the race scheduled for the 27th of December, 2023.

Welsh Grand National Distance & Fences

The Welsh Grand National is run over a distance of about 3 miles and 6½ furlongs (3 miles 6 furlongs and 130 yards, or 6,154 metres). Horses will have to navigate twenty-three fences over the trip.

2023 Welsh Grand National Betting Favourites

Monbeg Genius

Odds

The favourite to win the 2023 Welsh Grand National is Monbeg Genius at odds of 9/1. Those odds imply that Monbeg Genius has a 10% chance of winning the 2023 Welsh Grand National.

Pedigree

The Jonjo O’Neill-trained seven-year-old gelding is the son of Shantou and Ella Watson.

Career Record

His career record to date is 5 victories and 2 third-place finishes from 10 runs.

Over fences, he has 3 wins and 1 third-place finish from 6 races.

Form

Monbeg Genius most recently pulled up in Ascot at the beginning of November after several mistakes including one in which the jockey nearly fell. Despite that, he is a classy horse on his day.

Before that run his last race was at the Cheltenham Festival back in March in the Ultima Handicap Chase. He went into that race on a three-race winning streak and finished 2.25 lengths back of winner Corach Rambler.

Verdict

The poor showing in his last outing at Ascot does give some cause for concern. On the bright side, Monbeg Genius had a poor showing at the start of last season and bounced back to win his next three races.

It’s also worth noting that he is a perfect 3/3 at Chepstow where the Welsh Grand National is run. A worthy favourite who could make odds of 9/1 look silly.

Iwilldoit

Odds

The co-second favourite to win the 2023 Welsh Grand National is Iwilldoit at odds of 12/1. Those odds suggest that Iwilldoit has a 7.7% chance of winning this race.

Pedigree

Another classy horse, this time trained by Sam Thomas. The ten-year-old veteran is a son of Flying Legend and Lyricist’s Dream.

Career Record

This bay gelding has a solid career record of 6 victories, 3 runner-up finishes and 2 third-place finishes from 20 outings on track.

In steeplechase races, he has had his best form with 4 wins from 6 outings over fences.

Form

The horse most recently ran at Aintree earlier this month where he finished runner-up, beaten two lengths by winner Gentleman At Arms. This was an encouraging sign for connections of the horse after returning to the track following a 238-day break.

Iwilldoit’s last success came in Warwick back in January when he finished 2.75 lengths ahead of Mr Incredible.

Verdict

A specialist at Chepstow with two wins from two runs over fences at the track, one of those being the 2021 Welsh Grand National. In with a great chance of winning his second Welsh Grand National this December.

The Big Breakaway

Odds

The third favourite for the 2023 Welsh Grand National is The Big Breakaway at 12/1. Those odds imply that The Big Breakaway has a 7.7% chance of being crowned the next Welsh Grand National winner.

Pedigree

The eight-year-old gelding is trained by Joe Tizzzard and a son of Getaway and Princess Ecossaise.

Career Record

The horse’s career record from 17 excursions on track is 3 victories, 5 runner-up finishes and 2 third-place finishes.

Over fences it has often been a case of ‘almost’ for this gelding with 1 win, 5 second places and 1 third from 13 runs.

Form

The horse’s most recent outing on track was at Wincanton in November 2023 where he was fifth from a field of eleven horses but came a disappointing twenty-two lengths back of winner Blackjack Magic. This was the horse’s first return to the track in 210 days after falling in the Aintree Grand National and being pulled up at Cheltenham in the Ultima Handicap Chase.

Verdict

The horse hasn’t won since November 2020 at Cheltenham but at odds of 12/1, he is expected to go close in this year’s Welsh Grand National.

Blackjack Magic

Odds

Next up in the betting is Blackjack Magic who is a 14/1 chance to win the Welsh Grand National at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. Those odds suggest that Blackjack Magic has a 6.7% chance of 2023 Welsh Grand National glory.

Pedigree

The eight-year-old mare is trained by Anthony Honeyball and the son of Black Sam Bellamy and One Wild Night.

Career Record

Blackjack Magic’s early career record is a solid 5 victories, 1 runner-up finish and 2 third-place finishes from 14 races.

Over fences he has been prolific with 3 wins and one runner-up finish from five outings.

Form

Blackjack Magic in his most recent outing on track won over the three-mile and one furlong distance in Wincanton. In that race, he came three lengths clear of runner-up Threeunderthrufive. This was the first time the horse had seen the track in 224 days when the horse also won in Uttoxeter back in April.

Verdict

Blackjack Magic could represent value at 14/1 if his record over fences is anything to go by. He also has a win at Chepstow under his belt although that did come over hurdles in February 2022.

Complete Unknown

Odds

At 14/1 to win the 2023 Welsh Grand National is Complete Unknown. Those odds imply that Complete Unknown has a 6.7% chance of winning the 2023 Welsh Grand National.

Pedigree

Far from an unknown quantity, Complete Unknown is trained by Paul Nicholls and the seven-year-old son of Dylan Thomas and Silver Stream.

Career Record

This bay gelding comes into the race with big claims following an excellent career record of 5 wins, 5 runner-up finishes and 2 third-place finishes from 13 runs to date.

In chase races, the seven-year-old has 3 wins and 2 runner-up places from 5 runs.

Form

Complete Unknown returned to the track following Wind Surgery and a 190-day break on the 21st of October at Newton Abbot. That outing proved successful as he topped the three-horse field by one length ahead of Might. That could be the perfect warm-up to this race and can’t be ruled out with his prolific record.

Verdict

Prolific winner over fences and performed well at Chepstow back in 2021 when he came 2nd in a 15-horse strong handicap hurdle race.
