What Is The Cheltenham Arkle Chase?

The Cheltenham Arkle Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged five years or older. The race takes place on the Old Course at Cheltenham, England.

The race is for novice chasers and takes place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. It is the leading minimum-distance chase for novices in the National Hunt calendar. It is the second race on the opening day of the festival.

The Arkle Chase is run over a distance of about 2 miles (1 mile, 7 furlongs and 199 yards, or 3,199 metres), and thirteen fences are jumped.

Marine Nationale

The favourite to win the 2024 Cheltenham Arkle Chase is Marine Nationale at odds of 5/2. Those odds imply that Marine Nationale has a 28.6% chance of winning the 2024 Cheltenham Arkle Chase.

The six-year-old trained by Barry Connell and the son of French Navy and Power Of Future.

Marine Nationale is unbeaten from his time on the track passing the winning line 5 times from 5 outings. A perfect record.

His last outing came at Cheltenham back in March in the Supreme Novice Hurdle where he topped the fourteen-horse field, coming 3.25 lengths ahead of runner-up, and fellow Arkle Chase contender, Facile Vega.

That win would make it the horse’s fifth success from five races in which it has won by a cumulative 22.25 lengths. Those wins came on four race-courses: Punchestown (2), Killarney, Fairyhouse and most recently, and most importantly, Cheltenham.

Barry Connell is both the Trainer and Owner of this impressive gelding who is hotly fancied to land the spoils in the 2024 Arkle Chase.

Facile Vega

The second favourite for 2024 Cheltenham Arkle Chase success is Facile Vega at odds of 11/4. Those odds suggest that Facile Vega has a 26.7% chance of winning this race.

This is another classy horse and a member of the famous WP Mullins stable. The six-year-old is a son of Walk In The Park and a certain Quevega.

Facile Vega boasts a career record of 8 victories and 1 runner-up finish from his 10 times on track.

The horse most recently had an impressive showing in Navan in November 2023 where he beat eleven other horses in a Beginners Chase. In that appearance, he came 3.75 lengths ahead of runner-up Inthepocket (more on him in a second) to make it a victorious return the the track after a 207-day break. That was Facile Vega’s second win on the trot.

Inthepocket

The third favourite for the 2024 Cheltenham Arkle Chase is Inthepocket at 10/1. Those odds imply that Inthepocket has a 9.1% chance of being crowned the next Arkle Chase winner.

The six-year-old gelding is trained by Henry De Bromhead and a son of Blue Bresil and Engretta Island.

Inthepocket’s career record is an impressive 3 victories and 2 runner-up finishes from 6 races.

This gelding’s most recent outing on track came in November 2023 at Navan where he was runner-up as part of a twelve-horse field, coming three and three-quarters of a length behind the fast Facile Vega.

Mister Policeman

Next up in the betting is Mister Policeman who is a 12/1 chance to win the Arkle Chase at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. Those odds suggest that Mister Policeman has an 8.3% chance of 2024 Arkle Chase glory.

The five-year-old gelding is another member of the WP Mullins stable. He is the son of Triple Threat and Manhattan Princess.

Mister Policeman’s early career record is 3 victories from 4 races.

Mister Policeman’s most recent outing on track was at Fairyhouse earlier this month where he made his debut over fences. In that debut he topped the ten-horse strong field and beat Feu Du Bresil in a tight tussle by three-quarters of a length.

Gaelic Warrior

Another 12/1 shot in the betting is Gaelic Warrior. Those odds imply that Gaelic Warrior has an 8.3% chance of winning this race.

The five-year-old gelding is yet another member of the WP Mullins stable and the son of Game Of Legs and Hernando.

Gaelic Warrior’s career record is an ultra-consistent 5 victories, 2 runner-up finishes and 2 third place finishes from 10 outings

The five-year-old’s most recent showing was at Punchestown this month where he made his debut over fences. In that debut he was dominant over the two-mile and three-furlong trip, topping the eleven-horse field and finishing fifteen lengths ahead of runner-up Inothewayurthinkin.

That was the Gaelic Warrior’s first outing in 213 days after winning in Punchestown back in April 2023.
