Favourites

Ballymac Callaway- 5/2

The red-hot favourite for the 2024 Horse & Jockey Hotel Coursing Oaks is Ballymac Sports Owned and Trained by a certain Liam Dowling, a man who is no stranger to success across both codes in  “Greyhound Racing” and “Coursing”.

Ballymac Callaway (known as Ballymac Tag at the the time) booked her place for Clonmel at following a dominant display at Castleisland Coursing winning the Oaks Trial Stake (as part of a treble on the day for the Dowling team). Callaway booked her place by showing an early dash in the final and staying strong to win by roughly 3 and a half lengths in 10.79 seconds.

Following that success she was initially priced at 10/1 but her price would be cut further following another dominant victory this time in the Corn na Féile Oaks. Such has been her displays that prompted Denis Murphy to purchase a half share in her.

The White and Fawn January 2022 whelp, is bred in the purple being the son of multiple-time winner and 2020 Irish Champion Dog Winner Boylesportsmagic along with Ballymac Amber who is another multiple-stake winner and is a full sister of BoyleSports Derby favourite Ballymac Sports which preview can be viewed here

Edmonton Kilty 8/1

The second favourite for the 2024 Horse & Jockey Hotel Coursing Oaks is Edmonton Kilty Owned and Trained by Brendan Matthews for Fintan & John Comerford, Matthews is a serious operator on the coursing scene.

Her first outing was at Glin where she clocked fastest for the opening three rounds. However, after a heavy hunt she was withdrawn for the Semi-Final.

The bitch booked her ticket with an impressive victory at Bandon & Careys Cross Coursing last November/December beating Locko Sophie. Despite a shock first-round exit at Millstreet she remains a major contender to land the Horse & Jockey Hotel Coursing Oaks for Emma Selby and Una Hallissey.

Another progeny of arguably the stud dog of the year and multiple-time winner Kyle Mozart and Please Maeve who interestingly comes from track breeding along the dam line.

Could Edmonton Kilty win the Oaks? Time will tell

Zauberflute 12/1

The third favourite for the 2024 Horse & Jockey Hotel Coursing Oaks is Zauberflute.

Initially offline in the Freshford Trial Stake final she recomposed herself to land her ticket in the final for Gavin Johns and Paudie Lyons last November.

Her victory over  Fiadhs Go Go cemented her status as one of the early favourites.Zauberflute did lose to Ballymac Callaway in the Semi-FInal at Abbeyfeale though.

She has plenty of Powerstown Pedigree though, Zauberflute is another out-of-stud dog of the moment Kyle Mozart along with Laurina from the famous Belle Dam line, Laurina has produced multiple trial stake winners including Gigantor who won the 2022 Derby Trial Stake in Edenderry before coming runner-up in the 2023 T.A Morris Stake National Meeting

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that she strikes gold come Clonmel!

Macha Razor 12/1

The joint fourth favourite for the 2024 Horse & Jockey Hotel Coursing Oaks is Macha Razor representing the Champion Stakes winning duo of Patrick O’Connor and his mother Christina.

Macha Razor booked her place for Clonmel at one and onlt outing at Mitchelstown Trial Stake hosted at Clonmel & Kilsheen  Coursing last November winning the Oaks Trial Stake beating runner-up Ardmayle Quuen.

Macha is a highly rated daughter of Drive On Smokey who was runner-up in the Irish Cup in 2016 and 2017, with her mother Roxy Razor coming from a dam line of track bitches.

Could it be their second winner at Clonmel since Ballymac Nano?

Arctic Heiguer 14/1

Fifth favourite for the 2024 Horse & Jockey Hotel Coursing Oaks is Artic Heiguer, who is owned by the Heiguer Five O-Syndicate and trained by Dan Brassil.

Arctic defied “greenness” at her owners home meeting at Ballyheigue to reach the Semi-Final at the event.

Heiguer booked her place for Clonmel at Listowel Coursing winning their Oaks Trial Stake having been very impressive throughout the competition including the final where she showed exceptional early pace, always in front and beating runner-up Glouner Robyn last November.

The January pup is another daughter of Kyle Mozart and Mouse Is Fire who is a daughter of Blades of Fire 2017 Derby Winner and Mystery Sky.

Arctic has a tough first round course against Montana Dream, but the winner will be well fancied for success in Clonmel.
