Italy v England Preview

Italy Form

Form Coming Into The 2024 Six Nations

Italy come into this tournament following their Pool A elimination at the RWC, despite opening victories 52-8 against Namibia and 38-17 against Uruguay. They lost 97-17 against New Zealand and 60-7 against France to finish third.

England Form

Form Coming into the 2024 Six Nations

England opened their RWC campaign with a 27-10 victory against Argentina and while they were underwhelming at times, they quietly went about their business topping Pool D before defeating Fiji 30-24 in the Quarter-Final. They narrowly lost in the Semi-Final 15-16 to South Africa before beating Argentina again this time in the Bronze Final 23-26.

Italy Attack v England Defence

Italy at the 2023 Six Nations scored 89 points making them the second lowest scorer 5 more than Wales. At the RWC they finished on a 114-point total from their 4 matches, which was 2 points more than Fiji who played an extra game. But this remains to be a team who struggle for points.

In England they face a side who conceded 102 points at RWC and while that is more than 8 other sides they played 7 games in the tournament the joint most with Argentina who conceded 156 points, South Africa 88 and New Zealand 89 and it was only 11 more than Australia having played 3 more games.

England Attack v Italy Defence

England at the RWC had a solid attack by all accounts with their 221-point total across 5 matches only bettered by New Zealand’s 336 and France who had 238 in 5 games. Their total was even more than RWC Champions South Africa’s total of 208. It’ll be interesting to see where their points total comes though with Farrell out and 3 of their 4 wingers uncapped.

Italy are not strong defensively at this level demonstrated best by their defeats at RWC lost 97-17 against New Zealand and 60-7 against France.

Italy v England Rugby Head-To-Head

All-Time Head-To-Head Record

The national rugby union teams of England and Italy have been playing each other in Test rugby since 1991, and by February 2023, they had met in 30 test matches, all of which have been won by England.

Head-To-Head Results Last Five Matches

2023: England won 31-14 in Twickenham
2022: England won 0-33- in Stadio Olimpico
2021: England won 41-18 in Twickenham
2020: England won 5-34 in Stadio Olimpico
2019: England won 37-0 in Newcastle

Trends

England have never lost to Italy.

Key Players

Alessandro Izekor – Italy

The Italian flanker has already been highly spoken about by Italian legend Sergio Parisse, the uncapped man has been described as a “colossus of a back row who stands 6’5″ tall and weighs well over 17 stones”, by Rugby Pass. The man who plays his club rugby with Benetton Treviso will be out to make a big name for himself against the English.

George Ford – England

The man who proved pivotal to England’s earlier victories at the RWC in Farrell’s absence will be looking to cement a starting spot his talents arguably deserve. However, he faces stiff competition for the 10 jersey with up-and-coming fly-half Marcus Smith.

Italy v England Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Italy 3-33 England

Italy have never defeated England and I can’t see that formbook changing any time soon. England should run out comfortable winners.

Best Bet: England To Win Both Halves by 9 Points or More @ 5/2
