Six Nations Betting Favourites

Ireland – 2024 Six Nations Betting Favourites

Ireland are the favourites to win the 2024 Six Nations at odds of 1/9 according to the latest rugby odds at BoyleSports. Those odds imply that Ireland have a 90% chance of winning this year’s Six Nations Championship.

Ireland are 4/9 to complete the Grand Slam in 2024. In other words, they are far more likely to win the Grand Slam this year than not! That is a testament to the level this Irish team has reached and also an acknowledgement of the current state of English and Welsh rugby who in the past would have been expected to give Ireland really tough games.

Ireland’s Current Form

Ireland are the 2nd ranked national team in the world and the top-ranked European side. They had previously been the no. 1 ranked team going into the 2023 Rugby World Cup but lost that ranking after losing to New Zealand in the quarter-finals of that tournament.

Many analysts and rugby fans wondered if this Irish team might suffer from a World Cup hangover coming into this competition. Those doubts were quickly cast aside as Andy Farrell’s team dominated France in the Stade Vélodrome to claim a famous 38-17 win.

Farrell rang in the changes for the second test against Italy in the Aviva but there was no let up as the Irish won convincingly on a scoreline of 36-0.

As mentioned previously, prior to their Six Nations opener, the last time we saw Ireland was of course in their Rugby World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand. On that occasion, Ireland didn’t play up to their full potential and were subsequently beaten 24-28 by the All Blacks.

Despite yet another quarter-final loss, there were plenty of positives to take away from how this Irish squad acquitted themselves at that Rugby World Cup. Most notably, a 13-8 pool stage victory over eventual champions South Africa.

Ireland’s Six Nations Pedigree

Since the inception of (expansion to) the Six Nations in 2000, Ireland have been one of the most successful teams in the competition.

In that time Ireland have won:

3x Grand Slams

5x Six Nations

7x Triple Crowns

0x Wooden Spoons

In the most recent renewal of the tournament in 2023, the Irish were very impressive. They won all 5 of their matches to complete the Grand Slam for the 3rd time in the nation’s history. The highlight of those wins came in Dublin against a highly regarded France team who they beat 32–19.

England

The second favourites for the 2024 Six Nations are England at 8/1 per the latest rugby betting odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that England have an 11.1% chance of winning this tournament.

England’s Current Form

The English are the 5th ranked team in World Rugby’s latest rankings.

Steve Borthwick’s side survived an early opening round scare against Italy to secure a victory against Italy in Rome. They found themselves down 10 points early on but managed to take the lead early in the 2nd half, a lead which they wouldn’t relinquish.

Next up was Wales at Twickenham. Once again this English side got off to a slow start with two early yellow cards and a 9-point deficit at the half. England did just enough in the 2nd period as they held the Welsh scoreless and scored 11 points of their own to win 16-14.

At the 2023 Rugby World Cup, England gave a good account of themselves. They came agonisingly close to pulling off a semi-final upset over South Africa in the semi-finals but ultimately fell to a 15-16 defeat despite leading for the majority of the game. In a sense, the result could be viewed as a moral victory as they went into the game as massive underdogs.

Other notable results for England in the 2023 Rugby World Cup include a 27-10 win over Argentina in the pool stage and a 30-24 win over Fiji in the quarter-finals.

England’s Six Nations Pedigree

Since the inception of (expansion to) the Six Nations in 2000, England have been the most successful team in the competition.

In that time England have won:

2x Grand Slams

7x Six Nations (the most)

5x Triple Crowns

0x Wooden Spoons

England finished 4th in the 2023 Six Nations. They won just 2 of their 5 matches with those victories coming against Italy and Wales.

The lowlights of England’s 2023 campaign were a 10-53 loss against France in Twickenham and a 29-16 loss against Ireland in Dublin.

Round Fixture Date Venue
1 Italy 24-27 England February 3rd, 2.15 pm Stadio Olimpico, Rome
2 England 16 – 14 Wales February 10th, 3.00 pm Twickenham, London

4 England v Ireland March 9th, 4.45 pm Twickenham, London
5 France v England March 16th, 8.00 pm Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Décines

France

Next up in the betting is France who are rated as a 20/1 chance to win the 2024 Six Nations. Those odds suggest that France have a 4.8% chance of winning this competition.

France’s Current Form

The French are the world’s 4th-ranked team in the world behind South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand.

France suffered a humiliating 17-38 defeat at home to Ireland on the opening night of this Six Nations. That loss makes winning this year’s tournament a long shot.

Their next outing was a trip to Murrayfield where they took on Scotland. In what was a tightly contested game, decided by an agonisingly close TMO call at the death, France pulled it out on a scoreline of 20-16.

France came into this tournament hungry for success on the back of their disappointing Rugby World Cup quarter-final elimination. They lost 28-29 to South Africa at that stage of the tournament despite their status as tournament hosts. The highlight of France’s 2023 Rugby World Cup campaign came in the opening game against eventual finalists New Zealand who they beat 27-13.

France’s Six Nations Pedigree

Since the inception of (expansion to) the Six Nations in 2000, France have been one of the most successful teams in the competition.

In that time France have won:

4x Grand Slams

6x Six Nations

1x Wooden Spoon

In the 2023 Six Nations, France finished in 2nd place behind Ireland following a record of 4 wins from 5 matches in the competition. The highlight of their campaign was a 10-53 win over England in Twickenham.

Had it not been for their 32-19 defeat against the Irish in Dublin they would’ve won their second successive Grand Slam.

4 Wales v France March 9th, 3.00 pm Millenium Stadium, Cardiff
5 France v England March 16th, 8.00 pm Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Décines-Charpieu

Scotland

Scotland are 4th in the 2024 Six Nations outright betting odds at 8/1. Those odds imply that Scotland have an 11.1% chance of winning this Six Nations.

Scotland’s Current Form

The Scots just about held on for a win in their opening round game of this competition against Wales. They raced out to a 27-point lead early in the 2nd half but Wales mounted a historic comeback to reduce the deficit to a single point going into the final 10 minutes of the game. The Welsh however couldn’t finish the job as Scotland survived to put 4 points on the table.

At the 2023 Rugby World Cup Scotland were disappointing as they were eliminated at the pool stage following convincing defeats against both South Africa and Ireland.

Scotland’s Six Nations Pedigree

Since the inception of (expansion to) the Six Nations in 2000, Scotland have had little success in the competition.

In that time Scotland have won:

0x Grand Slams

0x Six Nations

0x Triple Crowns

4x Wooden Spoons

Scotland’s head coach Gregor Townsend came into last year’s Six Nations under mounting pressure from the nation’s media. However, Townsend guided Scotland to 3 wins from 5 matches and a very respectable 3rd place finish. The highlights of Scotland’s 2023 Six Nations campaign were their opening round 23-29 win against England and a 35-7 victory over Wales.

Scotland’s 2024 Six Nations Fixtures & Results

Round Fixture Date Venue
1 Wales 26-27 Scotland February 3rd, 4.45 pm Millenium Stadium, Cardiff
2 Scotland 16 – 20 France February 10th, 2.15 pm Murrayfield, Edinburgh
3 Scotland v England Feb 24th, 4.45 pm Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh
4 Italy v Scotland March 9th, 2.15 pm Stadio Olimpico, Rome
5 Ireland v Scotland March 16th, 4.45 pm Aviva Stadium, Dublin

Wales

Further out in the betting for this year’s Six Nations are Wales at 500/1 odds. Those odds imply that Wales have a 0.2% chance of being crowned this year’s Six Nations champions.

Wales’ Current Form

Wales are the 8th-ranked side in the world.

In their 2024 Six Nations opener, the Welsh got off to a slow start as they allowed Scotland to rack up a 27-point lead shortly after half-time. However, there is reason to be optimistic from a Welsh point of view as this team mounted an incredible comeback to reduce the gap to just 1 point. They couldn’t finish the job but their comeback will give them plenty of confidence going into the next round.

The 2nd game of this tournament for Wales came against England in Twickenham. Despite getting off to a strong start they were unable to hold onto a 9-point 2nd-half lead as they were held scoreless in that period to lose 16-14 and all but end any Six Nations hopes for this year.

At the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Wales won all 4 pool games against Fiji, Portugal, Australia and Georgia to top Pool C ahead of second-placed Fiji (who they beat narrowly 32-26 in their opening game).

Wales were knocked out of the tournament 17-29 at the Quarter-Final stage against an Argentina team that would go on to be hammered by the All Blacks.

Wales’ Six Nations Pedigree

Since the inception of (expansion to) the Six Nations in 2000, Wales have been one of the most successful teams in the competition.

In that time Wales have won:

4x Grand Slams

6x Six Nations

5x Triple Crowns

1x Wooden Spoon

During the 2023 Six Nations Wales had an extremely poor tournament. They lost 4 of their 5 matches to come second from bottom, only avoiding the Wooden Spoon through their 17-29 victory in Round 4 against Italy.

Warren Gatland came in for his second spell as Wales Head Coach in December 2022 (his first coming from 2007-2019) and it was announced that he will stay on in the role until the 2027 World Cup.

Time will tell if he can bring them back to their glory days but as of right now, there is a lot of work to be done.

Wales’ 2024 Six Nations Fixtures & Results

Round Fixture Date Venue
1 Wales 26-27 Scotland February 3rd, 4.45 pm Millenium Stadium, Cardiff
2 England 16 – 14 Wales February 10th, 4.45 pm Twickenham Stadium, London
3 Ireland v Wales February 24th, 2.15 pm Aviva Stadium, Dublin
4 Wales v France March 10th, 2.15 pm Millenium Stadium, Cardiff
5 Wales v Italy March 16th, 2.15 pm Millenium Stadium, Cardiff

Italy

Italy are the biggest outsiders for the 2024 Six Nations at odds of 1000/1. Those odds imply that Italy have just a 0.1% chance of winning this tournament.

Italy’s Current Form

The Italians were competitive in their opening-round fixture against England in this year’s tournament. They got off to a quick start as they built an early 10-point lead. The English kept chipping away at that lead and took the lead for themselves in the 2nd half as Italy would have to settle for a valiant 3-point loss in the end.

Italy faced Ireland away in round 2 and the game played out as many would have expected it to. The Italians were unable to put up a single point, losing out 36-0 to Ireland in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

At the Rugby World Cup, the Italians were drawn in a tough group with France and New Zealand. Despite going into their final pool game against France with an outside chance of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup Quarter-Final, they were hammered 60-7 to eliminate them from the tournament. In Pool A they finished 3rd with 2 wins and 2 defeats.

Italy’s Six Nations Pedigree

Italy joined the competition in 2000 to form the Six Nations from what was previously the Five Nations. Since their inclusion, Italy’s performances have been suspect.

In that time Italy have won:

0x Grand Slams

0x Six Nations

18x Wooden Spoons

They have never finished above 4th (achieved in 2013) and they’re usually found winless and bottom of the pile.

The Italians finished bottom of the 2023 Six Nations with 5 defeats from 5 matches. They remarkably came closest to beating France, only losing 24-29 in Round 1.

Interestingly, they finished with a points difference of -60 (three better than Wales) and substantially better than their -121-point total from the 2022 edition of this event.

Success for the Italians would be to avoid the Wooden Spoon.
