Nominees For The Best Director Oscar 2023

The five nominees for the Best Director Oscar 2023 are Todd Field, Daniel Kwan, Martin McDonagh, Ruben Ostlund and Steven Spielberg.

Best Director Oscar Preview

Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert – Best Director Favourite

The betting favourite for the Best Director Oscar is Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert at odds of 1/8. Those short odds make them massive favourites to bag the award this March.

Kwan and Scheinert are nominated for the prestigious award for their work in the film Everything Everywhere All At Once. That film is also the hot favourite to win the Oscar for Best Picture which means Kwan could be on for an impressive double at this year’s Academy Awards.

Steven Spielberg – Best Director 2nd Favourite

The second favourite in the betting for the Best Director Academy Award is Steven Spielberg at 9/2. The famous director already has three Oscars to his name with two coming in this very category for the blockbuster Schindler’s List in 1994 and Saving Private Ryan in 1999.

This time around he has earned a nomination for the Best Director Oscar for his directing in the movie The Fabelmans. The film is actually based on Spielberg’s own childhood and tells the story of a boy who falls in love with films and begins to create movies himself with just his camera.

Todd Field

At third in the betting market for Best Director at this year’s Academy Awards is Todd Field who is rated as a 16/1 chance. Field, 58, now has fourteen Oscar nominations to his name and it’s his work on the film Tár that has earned him a nomination in this year’s Best Director category.

Martin McDonagh

Another long shot in the betting for this year’s Best Director Oscar is Martin McDonagh at odds of 16/1 also. McDonagh is a British-Irish playwright and director and earned a nomination this year for directing the highly acclaimed The Banshees of Inisherin.

The Banshees of Inisherin is in fact the second favourite to win the Best Picture award at this year’s Oscars. The film, which stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, is about a falling out between two friends from rural Ireland.

Ruben Ostlund

Our final nominee in the Best Director category is Ruben Ostlund who is rated as a 50/1 outsider to claim the Academy Award. The film that he directed and secured him a nomination for Best Director is called Triangle of Sadness.

Ostlund is a Swedish director who is well known in the film industry for his work in The Square (2017) and Force Majeure (2014). The film Triangle of Sadness is about two influencers who go on a luxury cruise but things take a turn for the worst when the ship gets caught in a devastating storm.

Best Director Oscar Prediction

Steven Spielberg @ 9/2: This would be a bit of an upset with Daniel Kwan and Scheinert installed as massive 1/8 favourites but I think Spielberg justifies a punt at his odds. There’s no value in the two Daniels at odds that short and the other directors apart from Spielberg don’t really figure to stand much of a chance at going home with the awards for this category.

Spielberg is such a respected name in Hollywood that he will draw favour among many voters for his previous work and the masterpieces which he has directed. If anyone can upset the odds here then Spielberg looks to be the man to do it.
