Play was suspended at the Surrey venue on Friday, but the Tour confirmed that the tournament would resume early on Saturday morning with a winner crowned on Sunday after 54 holes are completed.

With the tournament now reduced by one round, Lowry has been backed into 7/1 from 14/1 with BoyleSports to record his first victory of the year at a course where he has posted top 20 finishes in eight of his last nine visits.

The World Number 23 opened with a bogey-free round of 66 on Thursday and is two shots behind co-leaders Tommy Fleetwood, Andy Sullivan and Viktor Hovland, who top the leaderboard on -8 with 36 holes remaining.

Hovland’s round of 64 saw him backed into 16/5 favourite from 16/1, while Tommy Fleetwood is the only other name ahead of Lowry in the betting after he shortened into 4/1 from 20/1.

Recent FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy is four behind the leaders after a -4 round of 68 and the pre-tournament favourite has now been pushed out to 10/1 from 5/1 at tee-off.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Shane Lowry has decent form at Wentworth and his opening round was very promising without a blemish on the scorecard.

Irish punters are rallying behind him now that he’s so well placed on the leaderboard and having backed him into 7/1 from 14/1 they’ll be hoping that long-awaited win is finally going to come this Sunday.”
