Irish Grand National Preview & Tips From Robbie Power

Irish Grand National preview from Paul Carberry

Thedevilscoachman, if he didn’t run a week or so ago, then he would be the right favourite, but two weeks to recover from that race for this one might not be long enough with another three miles and more ahead of him.

I assume he will run but I suspect he’ll need more time to recover if he is to win.

Gaillard Du Mesnil had a good win at Cheltenham, that’ll help him. Willie Mullins has a lot thrown in anhttps://twitter.com/BoyleSports/status/1645400864016695298d he looked one of his better winners at the Festival in a good race.

Dermot McLoughlin is a good friend of mine and he’s going well, he’s just down the road from me and it is great to see him win the race the last two years.

I think his runner Lord Lariat, winner last year, had a great prep run for this race at Leopardstown. Dermot obviously thinks he’s got a big chance of winning here and I think he does too.

Panda Boy has a good chance too, for sure. Martin Brassil has been very unlucky, he had two seconds at Cheltenham, it would be good to see him come back and get his head in front here.

It is a very open race, Angel’s Dawn won at Cheltenham, there is Stumptown as well, but it is going to be a cracker, it’ll be really hard to split them.

I suppose it will be a question of which horses come back right after going to Cheltenham as well, getting themselves back in order.

It’s a pretty straightforward formula to win the Irish Grand National

You need a horse that stays, definitely has to be able to do that. Noel Meade had two in the race in 2002 with The Bunny Boiler and Arctic Copper and the latter was probably the better horse, but he got to the second last fence and just stopped, he didn’t stay, the other horse did and went on to win.

The ground will be very testing at the moment so they will need a few dry days coming up. It’s pretty simple, a horse that jumps and stays well is needed to have any chance of winning the Irish Grand National.

Irish Grand National Tips

Paul Carberry

That’s a hard one at this stage, really difficult. I’ll go with one of Willie Mullins’, but I don’t know which one!

I’d  give Real Steel at 40/1 a good each-way chance.

A spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

“Angels Dawn and Stumptown fought out a thrilling finish at Cheltenham and both are popular bets, but Thedevilscoachman has been steadily backed since his recent win at Limerick and is in prime position to go off favourite in what looks like a fascinating renewal of the BoyleSpots Irish Grand National.”

BoyleSports Irish Grand National Favourites

Thedevilscoachman – BoyleSports Irish Grand National Favourite @ 6/1

Trained by Noel Meade and owned by J-P McManus the seven-year-old has certainly a winning profile! With that being said, it’s no surprise that the horse won its last outing on the racetrack against a five-horse-field in Naas back in January.

That day he won over a 3-mile 1-furlong distance by a neck. On that occasion this gelding was returning from a 56-day break from the track following a fall in Fairyhouse (where this BoyleSports Irish Grand National will be run) back in December, a race won by Mighty Potter.

From twelve career outings on track, this horse has a consistent record with seven victories, one second and one-third. Thedevilscoachman was one of a number of horses at 12/1 but his odds have been slashed to 6/1 favourite recently as money has come in on the McManus horse.

Panda Boy – 8/1

Trained by Martin Brassil the seven-year-old is another one of the market leaders despite not having the best of it on track recently. His most recent outing came on the 5th of March in Leopardstown when the horse fell at the fifth after being second and in touch with the leaders.

That had been the horse’s first ride on track after a 68-day break from its effort in Leopardstown back in December over a 3-mile trip. On that day the grey gelding came third, but only 0.75 lengths back from the winner in a massive 28-horse-field.

From twelve races this horse has three recorded victories and one third-place finish. The last victory came in Punchestown back in May of last year over the 3-mile trip winning where he beat a nine-horse field by an impressive nine lengths.

Panda Boy is 8/1 to return to that form and land The BoyleSports Irish Grand National.

Stumptown – 8/1

The Gavin Cromwell-trained horse is the only six-year-old amongst the market leaders for The BoyleSports Irish Grand National and is coming into the race in decent form.

Last time out the horse was very unfortunate in defeat, losing in the Challenge Cup Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase at Cheltenham by a neck from the winner Angels Dawn. Before that race, Stumptown had won two races on-the-spin in Thurles and Sandown respectively by a cumulative margin of victory of nineteen lengths.

This gelding’s career record from twelve runs includes three wins, one second and two-thirds. Could youth be on Stumptown’s side in The Irish Grand National? BoyleSports currently have Stumptown priced at 8/1 for victory.

Chemical Energy – 14/1

The Gordan Elliott-trained seven-year-old comes into the BoyleSports Irish Grand National following his second-placed finish to Gaillard Du Mesnil at Cheltenham. Despite being beaten 2.75 lengths last time out, it should be noted that Chemical Energy at Cheltenham was held up and hampered by a faller at the 16th fence which may have been the losing of the race for him.

This horse’s record on track from thirteen runs is a respectable six wins and two seconds, but you have to go back to Cheltenham on the 22nd of October last year for the horse’s last victory when it won over a 3-mile ½ furlong trip, beating a three-horse-field by an unprecedented 61 lengths.

Fellow Grand National contender Mahler Mission was one of the horses beaten on that occasion, 61 lengths behind. Chemical Energy is 14/1 to win the BoyleSports Irish Grand National.
