Canelo Álvarez v John Ryder Preview
Cancelo Alverez returns to Mexico for the first time in a decade in what is being billed as The King is coming home. His return to box in his homeland sees him face off against challenger John Ryder.
Cancelo won his last fight against Golovkin via unanimous decision back in September a fight he entered on the back of a defeat to Bivol who he will be looking to avenge the loss from sooner rather than later. In the lead up to the fight and throughout his career he has been criticised for “cherry-picking” his opponents which is something he denies.
Former British Boxer Tony Bellew has spoken with the media in advance of this fight saying “John is a fighter who I’ve known for a very long time, and I like him, and his team, a lot. He’s cut no corners in boxing and although he may not be widely known in America and Mexico, he definitely deserves this moment”.
John Ryder’s rise to the top of boxing is remarkable “I started working as a bouncer as my boxing career faltered but now face Canelo Alvarez in Mexico for world titles”.
Álvarez is known as an excellent counterpuncher, being able to exploit openings in his opponents’ guards while avoiding punches with head and body movement. He is also known as a formidable body puncher. Despite criticism of him from quarters it hard not say his fight record of 58 wins from 62 fights is pretty remarkable no matter who he has faced.
John Ryder is a Southpaw who has earned the nickname “The Gorilla” for his strength and toughness it’ll take more than that to win at the weekend but never say never.
Alvarez should still comfortably win this fight.
