Champions League Group F Preview

PSG

Paris Saint-Germain are the Champions League Group F favourites for 2023/24 at odds of 11/10.

The Parisians have been serial underachievers in Europe no matter how much money they have spent in recent years. Last season, despite a star-studded side with the likes of Messi, Neymar and Mbappé, they were still eliminated at the Round of 16 stage. It was Bayern Munich who knocked them out 3-0 on aggregate.

The summer was always going to be an interesting one in Paris and despite the never-ending Mbappé saga at the club, he remains a PSG player for this season. That means he wasn’t following Messi or Neymar out the exit door along with other notable departures like Ramos and Wijnaldum.

In typical PSG fashion though they only went and signed thirteen players again including; Marco Asensio (Free), Gonçalo Ramos (Loan), Ousmane Dembélé (€45 million) and Kolo Muani (€95 million).

PSG are 14/1 to win the tournament, 11/10 to win Group F and 8/11  to qualify out of the group stage.

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund had a decent year last season albeit a trophyless one. The German side came 2nd in the Bundesliga losing out on goal difference despite having the chance to win the title with a victory at home on the final day of the season.

They reached the quarter-final of the DFB Pokal and were knocked out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 stage following a 2-1 aggregate loss to Chelsea.

The major hole for Dortmund is the loss of World Class midfielder Jude Bellingham. The young England star was sold to Real Madrid for €103m during the summer and could prove almost impossible to replace even for a club which has one of the best scouting networks in the world.

Dortmund only brought in four players in the summer; Ramy Bensebaini, Felix Nmecha, Marcel Sabitzer and Niclas Füllkrug. Unfortunately, none of them are near the level of Bellingham.

Borussia Dortmund are 40/1 to win the tournament, 9/2 to win Group F and 5/4 to qualify out of the group stage.

AC Milan

This AC Milan side were disappointing in Serie A last season as they could only manage a 4th place finish. However, the potential of this side was seen in other competitions. They came runners-up in the Supercoppa Italiana before reaching the Champions League semi-finals where they were knocked out by city rivals Inter.

Despite Tonali signing for group rivals Newcastle, along with several of their loanees from last season returning to their parent clubs, I feel their squad will be stronger this season.

The signings of Pulisic, Chukwueze, and Reijnders are some of the more interesting names but there is a good mix of youth and experience in their signings. With that said, I do think that their stronger squad will benefit them more so domestically rather than in Europe this year.

AC Milan are 33/1 to win the tournament, 9/2 to win Group F and 11/8 to qualify out of the group stage.

Newcastle

Newcastle had a phenomenal year last season finishing in fourth place in the Premier League under Eddie Howe. This team’s meteoric rise up the table last season, from 11th the previous season to 4th, came as a shock to many football fans.

This Champions League campaign will be their toughest test yet. It will be interesting to see how Eddie Howe and the club prioritise this competition, especially with their slow start to this year’s Premier League.

The only big departure in the summer was Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood. Essentially all of their first-team squad from 22/23 remains besides those two.

Newcastle recruited a lot for their academy during the window but the additions of Tonali, Barnes, Livramento and Hall on loan will certainly strengthen their squad.

Newcastle are 28/1 to win the tournament, 9/4 to win Group F and 8/11 to qualify out of the group stage.

Game of the Group

Newcastle vs PSG – October 4th

Player to Watch – Sebastien Haller

After a tough period of sickness, Haller is back and enjoying his football and that is brilliant to see!

The 29-year-old is a quality striker worthy of watching regardless of his comeback from sickness and I think he could take this group by storm.

Table Prediction

1st – Borussia Dortmund

2nd – Newcastle

3rd – PSG

4th – AC Milan

This is without a doubt the Group of Death and any one of these sides could finish in any place. The one thing I feel confident in is that PSG will crash out at the group stage again continuing their Champions League blues (before I think winning the Europa League).

Dortmund will surprise a few to win this group, while I think Newcastle could sneak second spot.
