Champions League Group G Preview

Manchester City

Manchester City finally won that elusive Champions League last season after beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the final. Pep Guardiola’s side went unbeaten throughout last season’s competition. They won eight matches, and drew five, while scoring 32 goals and only conceding 5.

It’s hard to imagine that this team won’t be there or thereabouts again next season with the core of their squad still in place.

City did lose Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona and Laporte to Al Nassr, but last season’s treble winners have brought in plenty of quality to offset those losses. Namely; Mateo Kovačić, Joško Gvardiol, Jérémy Doku, and Matheus Nunes. Those additions could mean this team will be even stronger this season than last.

Man City are 2/1 to win the tournament for the second successive year, 1/10 to win Group G, and 1/100 to qualify from this group.

RB Leipzig

Last season Leipzig had an impressive season. Domestically they finished third in the Bundesliga, won the DB Pokal, and came runners-up in the DFL Supercup. In this competition, they qualified out of the group stage before they came up against this year’s group rivals Man City.

Man City made light work of the German side as they cruised to a 7-1 aggregate victory in the round of 16.

Leipzig was gutted during the summer with Nkunku leaving for Chelsea, Szoboszlai sold to Liverpool, striker Alexander Sørloth left for Villarreal while defender Gvardiol was sold to Man City. Those departures alone made the club €230 million.

Their recruitment will have to be mistake-free to replace that gluttony of talent but Carvalho on loan from Liverpool, Sesko from Red Bull Salzburg, and Xavi Simons on loan all look like excellent deals.

RB Leipzig are 50/1 to win the tournament, 11/2 to win Group G, and 1/6 to qualify out of the group stage.

Red Star Belgrade

The 22/23 Serbian League Champions are finally back in the Champions League following their playoff elimination last season 4-5 to Maccabi Haifa. They subsequently fell into the Europa League group stage where they finished bottom of their group with six points.

There are a lot of unknown quantities in their recruitment, following the sale of players to the likes of Zenit, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Spartak. Belgrade has brought in nine players from seven different countries, and it’ll be interesting to see how the team gels in this group.

Red Star Belgrade are 250/1 to win the tournament, 50/1 to win Group G, and 11/2 to qualify out of the group stage.

Young Boys

Swiss Champions Young Boys are returning to the competition for the first time since the 21/22 season. Their European exploits last year ended at the UEFA Europa Conference playoff stage when they were beaten by Anderlecht 3-1 on aggregate.

Now that they’re back in the Champions League they will be hoping to at least fight for third place in this group.

The Swiss side sold thirteen players during the summer including Christian Fassnacht to Norwich, Cédric Zesigner to Wolfsburg, and Rieder to Stade Rennais.

Young Boys have lived up to their name by having 12 arrivals in the summer with the majority of those being young players. One player of note for me is Saidy Janko from Real Valladolid who used to be on the books of Manchester United along with the addition of Males from Inter Milan

Young Boys are 500/1 to win the tournament, 50/1 to win Group G, and 11/2 to qualify out of the group stage.

Game of the Group

RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City – October 4th.

Player to Watch

Rico Lewis (18) is a wildcard choice, especially considering that he is a Manchester City player. This teenager who plays as a right-back is perfect for the Guardiola system as he is comfortable playing in midfield too.

Lewis looks a really promising player and if given game-time in the Champions League I think he will shine.

Champions League Group G Prediction

1st – Manchester City

2nd – RB Leipzig

3rd – Young Boys

4th – Red Star Belgrade

Manchester City should win this group at a canter and I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t concede a goal.

RB Leipzig with their additions should be more than good enough for second while the remaining two teams will fight it out for a Europa League spot.
