Chelsea’s Form

Chelsea last season finished 12th which was their first bottom-half-of-the-table finish since the 95/96 season when they were managed by Glenn Hoddle, it’s no surprise they went through four managers in 22/23.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is the man tasked with steering the ship at Chelsea inheriting a bloated squad. Despite seventeen players departing during the summer, they’ve brought in another twelve for over £300 million taking their two-season spending to over a billion.

Chelsea have had an interesting start to their season opening their account with a 1-1 draw in Stamford Bridge against Liverpool. That was followed by four points from their next five league games where they lost 3-1 against West Ham, 0-1 against Nottingham Forest and 0-1 against Aston Villa.

Those results had plenty (including myself) speculating that Pochettino could find himself getting the sack early in the season. However, the ship seems to have steadied since with two league victories in their last two games 0-2 against Fulham and 1-4 against Burnley.

The most revealing statistic for me (Per UnderStat) is that Chelsea on the Expected Points table are third on the table with 15.40 and are one place above Arsenal with 15.32 points. This is despite these teams being 11th and 2nd respectively and it indicates that there isn’t that much between both sides despite what their table positions would indicate.

Arsenal’s Form

Arteta deserves plaudits for his work since taking charge back in 2019, particularly bringing them from a fifth finish in 21/22 to second place and a title challenge for some of the 22/23 season. With that said, the club could be criticised for abandoning the cup competitions last year.

Following a big summer of recruitment with the likes of Havertz and Rice for over £200 million a lot more will be expected from them on all fronts this season

Arsenal have had a strong start to their season with four wins and one draw coming off their opening five league games, including an impressive 3-1 win over Manchester United to establish themselves as serious early-season contenders.

In their proceeding five league games, they have an identical record of four wins and one draw meaning they’re yet to taste defeat this season. Most impressively, before the international break they secured a 1-0 victory against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

Their early-season form has been very impressive and has them second in the table only trailing North London Rivals Tottenham on goal difference. However, their Expected Points stat has them fourth and not joint-top so perhaps they’re not as strong as the table says.
