Sheffield United’s Form

Sheffield United were promoted to the Premier League following their second-place Championship finish last season where they finished ten points behind league winners Burnley but eleven points ahead of third-place finishers and playoff winners Luton Town.

That was good enough to secure them a return to the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in the 20/21 season.

There was plenty of upheaval in the summer with Jack O’Connell retiring, Billy Sharp signing for La Galaxy, Enda Stevens departing for Stoke City and their star Midfielder Sander Berge signing for Burnley. Their most notable signing was midfielder Gustavo Hamer from Coventry City.

Sheffield United opened their Premier League season with four defeats and one draw (2-2 against Everton) from their opening five games. That doesn’t tell the full story though, in each of their four defeats they were beaten by a sole goal including against Manchester City and Tottenham.

However, in their last three games, they’ve conceded thirteen goals (including a 0-8 defeat against Newcastle) and have just one goal scored following that loss to Newcastle along with West Ham and Fulham.

While their result against Newcastle in particular is worrying, it should be noted the XG score of the game was only 0.9 to 3.9. That suggest that it wasn’t as poor of a performance as the scoreline would indicate.

Manchester United’s Form

Manchester United, following a season of progress last year, with a trophy and a return to the Champions League are back under pressure again such is the nature of modern football. From their opening eight matches, they have four wins and four defeats to currently sit tenth in the table.

United’s recruitment during the summer was strange, on one hand, they brought in Mason Mount, André Onana, Rasmus Højlund and Altay Bayindir who all filled needed holes in the squad along with Amrabat on loan.

On the other hand, Johnny Evans coming back to the club and Sergio Reguilón on loan (due to a lack of designated outgoings) are a sign of how poorly they have been run under the Glazer Ownership

They opened their season in typically chaotically United fashion, with six points from their opening five matches following defeats against Tottenham, Arsenal and Brighton. That run was followed by a narrow 1-0 victory against Burnley where they rode their luck, and a dismal performance against Crystal Palace where they lost 0-1.

Before the international break, it looked like the club were about to slump to their fourth defeat of the season with Brentford leading 0-1 going into the 92nd minute at Old Trafford. However, ten Hag sprung super-sub Scott McTominay from the bench to score a crucial 93rd and 97th-minute goal to save this side’s blushes.

It’ll be interesting to see what comes now. Is that game the turning point of Manchester United’s season or is it just cracks being papered over again? They’re playing bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United in this one, another opportunity to build confidence which is at rock bottom right now.

Sheffield United have had a poor start to their season as they sit bottom of the table with one point. They’ve conceded the most goals with 22 and are the only team to have scored less than their six goals is Bournemouth with five goals.

Manchester United have plenty of problems on and off the field but this should be a winnable game for them following the late McTominay brace to save their skins against Brentford.

An early goal is crucial here, if Manchester United get one I can see them going on to win this comfortably. However, the longer the game goes on without a goal the more Sheffield United will grow in confidence.
