Willie Mullins – Cheltenham Top Trainer Favourite

The overwhelming favourite to land the Top Trainer prize at Cheltenham Festival is Willie Mullins at 1/6 per the latest horse racing odds at BoyleSports. Those odds imply that Willie Mullins has an 85.7% chance of landing the most successes of all Trainers at Cheltenham.

Mullins is synonymous with the Cheltenham Festival as he is the most successful trainer in the Festival’s history with 94 successful training performances. Willie has been the leading trainer at the festival on 10 occasions. The first of those came back in 2011 with 4, he then repeated the feat in 2013 with 5, in 2014 with 4, in 2015 with 8 and in 2016 with 7.

Following 2 years of Gordon Elliott dominance, Mullins has had a stranglehold on the Festival in recent years, being the Leading trainer in 2019 with (4), 2020 with (7), 2021 with (6), 2022 with (10) and last year with (6).

While he is an impressive trainer in his own right, it’s a team effort with Mullins. He first had a fruitful relationship with Ruby Walsh as his top jockey who won Leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival in 2004, 2006, 2008-11, 2013-17. Walsh has since been replaced by Paul Townsend who was the leading jockey in 3 of the last 6 years coming in 2020 with (5), 2022 with (5) and last year again with (5) winners and is 4/11 to be the top jockey at the festival.

The two other members of the Mullins team will be Danny Mullins who is 20/1 to land the Top Jockey prize and who recently had a brilliant Dublin Racing Festival alongside Patrick Mullins who rode Champagne Fever to success in the Champion Bumper last year.

Those jockeys will be tasked with leading the talented team which includes the likes of Galopin Des Champs and El Fabiolo to victory at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

Gordon Elliott

The joint second favourite to land the Top Trainer prize at the Cheltenham Festival is Gordon Elliott at 7/1 per the latest horse racing betting odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Gordon Elliott has a 12.5% chance of landing the most successes of all trainers at Cheltenham.

Gordan Elliott is the last man not named Willie Mullins to win the Top Trainer prize at Cheltenham. Elliott won it at the 2017 festival with six winners and the 2018 festival with eight winners averaging seven winners per meeting. The most recent success came as a combined part of a duel success with jockey Davy Russell who landed him 4 of his 8 winners at the festival.

Russell postponed retirement last year following the injury of leading stable jockey Jack Kennedy who suffered a leg break in the January before the festival.

This time around Kennedy is fit and raring to go. In him, Elliott might just have his ace in the pack back to help mount a challenge for the top trainer title again. With a talented team including the likes of Gerri Colombe, and Brighterdaysahead, he could be primed for another big festival.

Nicky Henderson

The other joint second favourite to land the Top Trainer prize at the Cheltenham Festival is Nicky Henderson at 7/1 per the latest Cheltenham betting odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Gordon Elliott has a 12.5% chance of being the most decorated trainer at this year’s festival.

Nicky Henderson is another Cheltenham giant with the British trainer’s 73 Cheltenham winners making him the second most successful trainer in the history of the meeting only behind leading fancy Willie Mullins on 96. Henderson’s sole success at the festival last year came with Constitution Hill who was an impressive winner of the Champion Hurdle.

Henderson was the leading trainer at this event in 2012 with 7 winners, 2010 with 3 winners and 2000 with 4 winners.

The leading jockey for the Henderson team is Nico De Boinville who won the Cheltenham top rider award in 2019 with three winners: Altior (Queen Mother Champion Chase), Pentland Hills (Triumph Hurdle) and William Henry (Coral Cup). De Boinville will likely need a bigger total to land the prize in 2024 and help Henderson towards Top Trainer honours.

With the Henderson team flooded with talent including the likes of Shishkin, Jonbon and Constitution Hill, Henderson could certainly land a few winners at the Cheltenham Festival in 2024 although it will be a tough task to wrestle the title from Willie Mullins.
