Donegal v Derry Preview

Donegal’s Form

Donegal will play their football in Division 2 next season after being relegated from Division 1 with a record of one win, one draw and five defeats during their league campaign. The win came in a 0-13 to 0-12 home victory against Kerry in Round 1 and the draw came at home hosting Galway in Round 4 in a 1-09 to 0-12 score.

Donegal’s 76-point total an average of 10.85 per match was the worst in the division with the next worst being Armagh with 95 points. Donegal also had a poor defence, their 117 points conceded was an average of 16.71 points per match was the second worst in the league after Monaghan on 119 points.

Their poor form continued during the Ulster Championship when they were beaten at the first hurdle by Down 2-13 to 1-11 in the Ulster Quarter-Final.

In the All-Ireland Series, they were drawn in Group 4 with Derry, Monaghan and Clare and finally did return to winning ways in their first game against Clare in a 0-9 to 0-14 scoreline.

 Derry’s Form

Derry had an excellent 2023 League Campaign not losing a single game in Division 2. They beat Limerick, Louth, Meath, Kildare, Dublin and Clare in their opening six weeks before drawing with Cork 1-14 to 1-14 to secure the top spot and their Division 2 Final place against Dublin.

Derry has the third-best attack in the league with 120 points scored which is an average of 17.14 points per match, only Dublin (125) and Cork (137) have more.

Derry’s most impressive stat is their mean defence with only 69 points conceded which is only an average of 9.85 points per match and 26 points better than the next-best defence Dublin. However, despite leading in the League Final, an excellent second-half display by Dublin meant they lost out on the league title in a 0-11 to 4-06 scoreline.

They started their Ulster Championship run by beating Fermanagh in the Quarter-Final 2-08 to 3-17  and earned their place in the final by winning 1-21 to 2-10 against Monaghan. They then drew 1-15 to 0-18 against Armagh in the Ulster Final before winning it (3)-(1) on penalties to earn their first silverware of the year.

In the All-Ireland Series, they were drawn in Group 4 with Donegal, Monaghan and Clare and drew their first game at home against Monaghan 0-14 points apiece in a game that they were behind in for the majority of the 70 minutes.

Key Players To Watch

Ciaran Thompson

In a depleted Donegal side with the loss of so many through retirements, injuries and emigration Ciaran Thompson has emerged as the main threat.

The Naomh Conaill clubman can play in midfield or the half-forward line and made his Championship debut back in 2016. Now 27, his role with Donegal has arguably never been more important and he hit 0–4 in their victory against Clare last time out.

Conor Glass

Since returning from the AFL in 2020, the midfielder has been credited with helping to “Change the whole landscape of Gaelic Football in Derry”. There are not many compliments if any greater than you could give a footballer. But that is exactly what is being argued about the 25-year-old who recently assumed the captaincy of his county.

2022 was a great year for Glass, Ulster Champion with Derry, Derry County Champion with Glen, Ulster Club Champion and an All-Star Award. He missed out on the Division 2 title but helped this team to a second consecutive Ulster title and will be crucial to Derry’s gameplan in this matchup with Donegal.

Donegal v Derry Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Donegal 0-12 Derry 0-16

Donegal may have enjoyed an opening-round victory against Clare albeit a match that should have been winning. Aside from that result, they have flattered to deceive all season.

Ulster Champions Derry have been largely consistent and should have far too much for Donegal.

In Sunday’s other TV game Mayo take on Louth and we previewed that game in our Mayo v Louth Prediction post.

Best Bet: Derry Winning Margin 4-6 Points @ 3/1
