England v Argentina Preview

England’s Form

World Number 6 ranked England enter the 2023 World Cup in rather poor form for their high standards and expectation levels. They finished fourth in the most recent Six Nations campaign with only two wins to go with three defeats.

That extended their poor run of form in the competition. Since their 2020 Six Nations success they’ve come fifth in 2021 and third in 2022.

In the first of their World Cup warm-ups, they had a disappointing 20-9 defeat against an out-of-form Wales. However, England avenged that a week later by claiming a narrow 19-17 home victory against the Welsh.

Their warm-up form spiralled further after that however. They were comfortably beaten 29-10 by Ireland which was followed by a shock 22-30 defeat against Fiji. This showcased again that this is a far-from-vintage England team.

Steve Borthwick has only been Head Coach since the 19th of December after taking over from Eddie Jones and there is little sign of him turning his fortunes around just yet. With that said, a win here in this Pool D opener could be just the catalyst that this England team needs.

We previewed England’s Rugby World Cup odds and chances in a recent post which you can find here.

Argentina’s Form

World Number 8 Argentina are making their tenth World Cup appearance this September. The country’s best-ever finish in the competition is third place which they achieved back in 2007.

Argentina have had in-different form in 2023 in terms of results with two wins from six matches but that doesn’t tell the full story.

The Pumas opened their 2023 Rugby Championship campaign losing their opening game 12-41 to New Zealand. They bounced back well though a week later as they earned a well-fought narrow victory 31-34 against Australia. They finished that tournament with a narrow 22-21 loss against South Africa who are many people’s fancy to retain the Webb Ellis trophy this autumn.

The Argentinians began their World Cup warm-ups a week later when they were again beaten by South Africa. This time it wasn’t as close with the final score reading 13-24.

Their final game in advance of this tournament was a 3-62 win against Spain which probably doesn’t tell us much but at the least can’t be viewed as a negative.

Argentina’s competitive form in the whole has many tipping Michael Cheika’s side as potential surprise packages in France this autumn.

England Starting Lineup

Argentina Starting Lineup

Key Players To Watch

Manu Tuilagi

There is not much that needs to be said about Manu (32) that hasn’t been said before. He is one of the most explosive centres in World Rugby when on form and he should have a big part to play for England at the weekend after being named in the Starting 15.

Emiliano Boffelli

My man to watch for Argentina is fourth favourite to be the Top-Scorer at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, winger/full-back Emiliano Boffelli. The 28-year-old has scored 273 points for his country in 53 caps and looks another likely contender for the prize.

If Argentina are to get a crucial win over England to kick off their World Cup campaign then Boffelli will be key.

England v Argentina Head-To-Head Results

These two teams have played each other twenty-five times. England have won 19 of those matches, Argentina have five wins while there’s one draw between the two nations.

In the Rugby World Cup England and Argentina have faced off three times with England winning all of those games.

Here are the last five results between these two teams:

England 29 – 30 Argentina | November 6, 2022 | Twickenham, England

England 39 – 10 Argentina | October 5, 2019 | Tokyo, Japan

England 21 – 8 Argentina | November 11, 2017 | Twickenham, England

Argentina 25 – 35 England | June 17, 2017 | Santa Fe, Argentina

Argentina 34 – 38 England | June 10, 2017 | San Juan, Argentina

England v Argentina Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: England 25-18 Argentina

England are in poor form and a lot is being made of this Argentinian side so this could be an extremely close contest (as shown by the identical odds across the board).

I still think England should  edge this one, on the big stage I expect them to put in a big performance.

Best Bet: Winning Margin England 1-10 points @ 21/10
