The Form – England vs North Macedonia

England’s Form

For all their critics and cynics England have not been this consistent on the international stage in some time, perhaps ever. Following a fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup that was followed by Euro 2020 Runners-Up finish and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup.

England enter their third qualifier in Group C with a 100% record after wins over both Italy and Ukraine in March. In fact, they have won four out of their last five matches with their other two victories coming 3-0 against Senegal and Wales at the World Cup. Their only defeat was when they lost 1-2 against France in the World Cup Quarter-Final.

North Macedonia’s Form

North Macedonia are coming into this International Window with a record of two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five matches. They have two wins in their last two games coming in the March window winning 1-0 against Faroe Islands and 2-1 against Malta.

During the November internationals, they had two home games being defeated 1-3 by Azerbaijan and earning a 1-1 draw against Finland. Their other result came in a 1-0 defeat against Saudi Arabia in October.

North Macedonia qualified for Euro 2020 which was the first time and only time in the country’s history that they qualified for an international tournament since independence from Yugoslavia.

Head Coach Blagoja Milevski has been in charge since 2021 and they narrowly missed out on World Cup qualification in 2022 after beating Italy to earn the right to play Portugal in a ‘winner gets a World Cup finals spot’ game. Unfortunately they lost 2-0 to Portugal in the playoff final game and come into this match on the back of a tough game to Ukraine on Friday.

England vs North Macedonia Preview

England Tactics

No matter what the result Friday, Southgate will stick with his trusted 4-3-3 formation. Given that I don’t expect there to be too much rotation between this and their game against Malta with Walker and Grealish (if he’s recovered from his Champions League celebrations) candidates to possibly come into the team.

England is averaging the eighth-highest XG of all teams in the qualifiers with 4.2 across their two games. The fifth best performers with an average FotMob rating of 7.35.

The key to this game will be how clinical can England be with them likely to dominate possession, but North Macedonia will be tough to break down. If Southgate had some neck as a Head Coach he would rotate his team considerably for the game against Malta and bring back his tried and trusted 11 for this one but I can’t see that happening.

North Macedonia Tactics

North Macedonia are a tactically flexible outfit that can be seen in a variety of formations from 3-4-1-2, 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1. This tactical flexibility makes it very difficult to pin down exactly who and how they are going to approach this match against England.

While they average more possession than England 59.1% vs 49.8% I’d expect them to drop deeper and leave England to have the ball.

If lining out in a 3-4-1-2, captain Ristovski of Dinamo Zagreb and Alioski formerly of Leeds will likely drop into a back five to make them even tougher to break down. This Macedonian side rank 11th for successful tackles per match with 12 and 14th for interceptions with 11 per match.

Going forward their star man is Eljif Elmas who plays his club football with Napoli. He is an effective passer attempting 55.84 per match which is in the 95th percentile and completing 87.4% of them which is in the 99th percentile compared with other midfielders. He is likely to be the hold-up player in attack and their main scoring threat.

When Macedonia do attack though expect them to get plenty of crosses into the box with the team ranking 10th for accurate crosses with 7 per match.

England vs North Macedonia Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: England 2-0 North Macedonia

This will be the tougher of the two fixtures for England in this international window. However, they should still have far too much for North Macedonia but don’t expect it to be by a cricket score either.

Another big game will be taking place this Monday in Dublin. Ireland will welcome Gibraltar to the Aviva Stadium and we previewed Ireland v Gibraltar in a recent post.
