The Group Stage

England were drawn in Group B of this World Cup along with Iran, the USA, and neighbours Wales.

Southgate’s side were strong favourites to win the group going into the tournament and they are in an even better position now following their six-goal performance against Iran in the opener.

After the opening round of fixtures, the Three Lions are atop the table with two points separating them from Wales and the USA who played to a draw in their opening game. England will be expected to beat both the USA and Wales over the next two games as we have them priced up at 1/7 to finish top of Group B here at BoyleSports.

England’s Group B Fixtures:

Matchday 1: England 6-2 Iran

Matchday 2: England vs USA – 7 pm, Nov 25th

Matchday 3: Wales vs England – 7 pm, Nov 29th

The Round of 16

If England are to go ahead and win Group B as we expect then they will play the runner-up of Group A in the round of 16. Group A contains the Netherlands, Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar. Based on the opening round of games in Group A, and the betting odds, the most likely opponent for England in this round is Ecuador.

The Ecuadorians beat Qatar 2-0 in their opening game but Senegal are still in with a great chance of grabbing second spot in this group so don’t rule them out as a potential opponent for England here either

If the Netherlands were to slip up then they could drop to second spot in Group A. This would be an unwelcome result for England but it’s a less likely outcome than the other two a matchup with the other two teams.

In short, England will likely play either Ecuador or Senegal in the round of 16 and they will be heavily favoured to advance to the quarter-finals.

Most Likely Round of 16 Matchup if England win Group B

Match 51: England vs Ecuador – 7 pm, Sun, Dec 4th

Most likely Round of 16 matchup if England finish 2nd in Group B:

Match 49: England vs Netherlands – 3 pm, Sat, Dec 3rd

The Quarter-Finals

If Gareth Southgate’s side make it to the last eight of the tournament after having won their group they will play the winners of Match 52. The teams playing in match 52 are the winners of Group D and the Group C runner-up.

Based on the betting odds France will beat Mexico in the round of 16. This will set England up with a game against the reigning World Champions in the quarter-final.

If England stumble in Group B and qualify for the knockout stages via a second place group finish then based on the betting odds they are most likely to play Argentina.

By the way the draw works out, England’s toughest game of the tournament could be the quarter-final even if they do make it to the final.

Most likely quarter-final matchup if England win group B:

Match 59: England vs France – 7 pm, Sat, Dec 10th

Most likely quarter-final matchup if England finish 2nd in Group B:

Match 57: England vs Argentina – 7 pm Fri, Dec, 9th

The Semi-Finals

Needless to say, once we get to this stage of the tournament it gets much harder to predict who the Three Lions would face. If they win Match 59 then their most likely opponent based on the betting odds is Spain. With that being said, there is every chance that they could play one of Germany, Portugal or Belgium here too.

If England get to the semi-final stage by winning match 57 then by far the most likely matchup is with tournament favourites Brazil. Luckily for Southgate and his men they should win Group B and avoid this fate, at least for one more round.

A second-place finish in Group B would see this England team potentially have to beat the two tournament favourites, Brazil and Argentina, to reach the final.

So topping the group is vital for the Three Lions.

Most likely semi-final matchup if England win group B:

Match 62: England vs Spain – 7 pm, Wed, Dec 14th

Most likely semi-final matchup if England finish 2nd in Group B:

Match 61: England vs Brazil – 7 pm, Tues, Dec 13th

The World Cup Final

Now for the greatest stage of them all, the World Cup Final. If this England squad can make it through to the final of this tournament they will have already beaten some of the top teams in the World Cup.

Their most likely opponent in the final is the tournament favourites Brazil.

Although it really could be any of the top teams at this stage of the competition and you can be sure that it will be a tough game.

Most Likely World Cup Final matchup:

Match 64: England vs Brazil – 3 pm, Sun, Dec 18th
