Group C Preview – Euro 2024 Qualifiers

Italy

The defending champions will be looking to return to the European Championships again for the 2024 tournament after missing out on the 2022 World Cup. However, we have been here before with Italy prior to their victory in 2020 they had failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Is there a pattern emerging for Italy who has been managed by Mancini since 2018? Is a victory at Euro 2024 inevitable? Italy have a strong spine to their side with the likes of Donnarumma (24) and Barella (26) along with young Leeds United forward Gnonto (19) who could be a gem for this team.

The Italians are 5th favourites in the betting to defend their title at Euro 2024 at odds of 9/1.

England

For all their critics and cynics, England has not been this consistent on the international stage in some time, perhaps ever. England’s recent major tournament form makes for impressive reading with a fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup that was followed by Euro 2020 Runners-Up finish and most recently a Quarter-Final appearance at the 2022 World Cup.

Gareth Southgate has managed England since 2016 and will not only fancy his side for routine qualification but also to win the outright tournament the following summer. This English generation has some bonafide superstars including Jude Bellingham (19), Phil Foden (22) and Marcus Rashford (25) who will all be key to their success.

Our odds makers have England as the third favourites at 6/1 to go one better than they did in Euro 2020 by winning next year’s tournament.

Ukraine

Following a quarter-final appearance at Euro 2020, Ukraine will be looking to qualify for the competition again after narrowly missing out on a place at the 2022 World Cup when they lost the play-off 1-0 to Wales. Since that disappointment they have been in decent form in the Nations League with three wins, two draws and only one defeat.

However, they are without a permanent coach with Ruslan Rotan put in caretaker charge. Remarkably Rotan is also in charge of the Ukraine U21 team along with FC Oleksandriya at club-level. Ukraine have some talented footballers though so do not rule them out of scaring the big two with the likes of Zinchenko, Mykolenko and Mudryk.

This Ukraine team have been installed at odds of 100/1 to go all the way in Euro 2024.

North Macedonia

Euro 2020 was the first time and only time in the countries history that they qualified for an international tournament since independence from Yugoslavia. Since 2021 Blagoja Milevski has been in charge narrowly missing out on guiding them to the 2022

World Cup beating Italy in the play-off semi-final only to lose out 2-0 to Portugal in the final. They have been in poor form recently with four defeats and a draw.

However, they will get another crack against Italy in this group and should go into the match with confidence knowing that they have beaten them in a recent big game. North Macedonia will struggle to qualify from this group and that is reflected by their odds of 750/1 to win next years Euros.

Malta

Italian Michele Marcolini has recently taken charge of the country since his appointment last December. Malta are currently ranked 167th in the world and in 2022 had a record of five wins, one draw and four defeats.

Malta will be going into these rounds of fixtures with no pressure on the side. Could that prove to be in their favour? Honestly? Probably not.
