Group H Preview – Euro 2024 Qualifiers

Denmark

Kasper Hjulmand has overseen the Danes since 2020 when he guided the country to a Euro 20020 semi-finals losing 2-1 to England after extra time when England received a controversial penalty.

Denmark would later finish second in their group in the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League A, one point behind Croatia. The last time out for the Danes was less impressive, during the 2022 World Cup they came last in their group with one draw and two defeats, scoring only once in the tournament.

The 1992 European Championship winners boast quality names across their squad though and will be expecting to put their recent form behind them and qualify for Euro 2024 with the help of big name players like Christensen (26), Højbjerg (27) and Eriksen (31).

Finland

Finnish Head Coach Markku Kanerva has been in charge since 2016 after progressing through the coaching ranks in the country. He was Finland’s U21 manager from 2004-2010 and senior assistant from 2011-2016 before getting the main job.

Kanerva would go on to help them qualify for their first-ever international tournament Euro 2020 where they would be eliminated at the group stages. Their form in 2022 was mediocre with five draws, three defeats and only two wins.

If Finland is going to have a chance to qualify for their second-ever international tournament then Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki (32) will be crucial to success as the country’s all-time leading goal scorer with thirty-seven goals in one hundred and seven games.

Slovenia

The current man in the dugout for Slovenia is Matjaž Kek. He first took charge of the country from 2007-2011 and began his second spell with the country in 2018. In his time so far with this squad Kek has managed the team in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers, where Slovenia finished in fourth place with four wins out of ten games.

In 2020, Slovenia went undefeated for a record eight consecutive games and also finished first in Group 3 of the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League C which saw them promoted to League B.

Slovenia will need captain and star keeper Jan Oblak (30) in top-form along with up-and-coming hitman Benjamin Sesko (19) of Red Bull Salzburg to be firing if they are to have a chance of qualifying out of this group.

Kazakhstan

Magomed Adiyev was appointed head coach of the Kazakhstan national team last May and in November his contract was extended for another two years. In his first nine matches in charge, he has led them to a respectable four wins, one draw and only three defeats.

The country will be looking to build on their decent form and qualify for their first international tournament ever. It will be a tough task though with almost their entire squad bar a handful playing their local football in Kazakhstan with the others playing in Russia.

Northern Ireland

Michael O’Neill is back in charge of Northern Ireland after being the man in charge from 2011-2020 which was inarguably the country’s most competitive spell in modern-day International history. That time included their sole and only Euro Championship in 2016 when O’Neill coached them to a Round of 16 appearance.

Despite being fifth seed, Northern Ireland can feel more than fortuitous with their draw and if Michael O’Neil can rediscover his magic in the dugout they could be in contention again to qualify for another Euros.

Northern Ireland have some promising talents coming through also including Conor Bradley (19), Isaac Price (19) and Dale Taylor (19).

San Marino

Often considered the worst international side around having only won one match ever when they defeated Liechtenstein 1–0 in a friendly match on the 18th of April 2004.

San Marino concede an average of 4.2 goals per match. However, as a member of UEFA, they do face stronger competition than other lowly-ranked sides they are currently ranked 211th in the world.

Fabrizio Costantini has been in charge of the country since 2021 and before that managed their U21 side from 2017-2021. It is unlikely we will be getting a competitive San Marino in this group.
