Group I Preview – Euro 2024 Qualifiers

Switzerland

Murat Yakin was appointed as the Swiss manager in August 2021 and he would guide the side to qualification for the 2022 World Cup when they won their group which included Italy, Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania.

At the World Cup Switzerland came second in their group with Brazil, Cameroon and Serbia however in the round of 16 they got knocked out after being beaten 6-1 by Portugal.

The Swiss will be now looking to return to the Euro Championship after their quarter-final appearance in 2020. The likes of Xhaka (30), Zakaria (26) and Embolo (26) will be key to any success.

Israel

Alon Hazan was appointed as Israel’s manager last May following various roles in the Israel football federation including as caretaker manager, assistant senior manager and as U21 manager.

Since taking the senior role he has taken charge of seven games so far managing his side to three victories, two draws and two defeats which is good enough for a win ratio of 42.86%.

Israel enters this qualifying campaign looking to qualify for their first-ever European Championship and arguably have their best chance ever following a strong period at the U21 level the likes of Doron Leidner (20), Oscar Gloukh (18) and Liel Abada (21) lead the way.

Romania

Edward Iordănescu was appointed as the Romania manager in January 2022 and has currently taken charge of ten matches he has a record of managing three wins, two draws and five defeats. However, they have won two of their last three matches which include a 4-1 thrashing of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 5-0 demolition of Moldova.

Romania have not appeared at the Euro Championship since their group stage elimination in 2016 with their best tournament appearance coming in 2000 when they reached the quarterfinals of the competition.

The Romanian squad is likely to have lots of talent plying their trade in Europe with a strong core playing in Italy. Their main goal-scoring threat should come from Genoa forward George Pușcaș who has ten goals in thirty-four games for his country.

Kosovo

Alain Giresse was appointed as Kosovan manager in February 2022 and has taken charge of ten matches so far managing a record of four wins, three draws and three defeats. This was good enough for second in their Nations League group ahead of Northern Ireland and Cyprus and behind Greece.

Kosovo has only been accepted as a UEFA Nations since 2016 members voted 28–24 in favour of Kosovo. Ten days later the country was accepted by FIFA during their 66th Congress in Mexico, with 141 votes in favour and 23 against. Kosovo has yet to qualify for an international tournament.

One might expect Kosovo to have a team of “no names” (for want of a better phrase) but this could not be further from the truth. Their squad includes the likes of captain and star centre-back Amir Rrahmani plays for Napoli currently leading the Serie A on a canter, midfielder Edon Zhegrova (23) of Lille and Vedat Muriqi (28) of Mallorca who has twenty-three international goals in only forty-four games for his country.

Belarus

Georgy Kondratyev is currently undertaking his second stint as Belarusian manager following overseeing the 2011-2014 period Georgy had held several roles in the Belarusian FA before this. Following a period from 2019-2021 as assistant manager he again became the manager of his country in 2021.

Belarus will be looking to qualify for their first-ever international tournament in this qualifying campaign, but it will be tough coming off 2022 where they had four defeats, three draws and only three wins.

While Belarus are not a nation with many star names, they will have a squad of players who will be very familiar with one another. Of the latest 23-man squad Bate Borisov have five representatives along with Dinamo Minsk.

Andorra

Koldo Álvarez is one of the longest-serving international managers in the world, following retirement in 2009 after a career which saw him represent the country seventy-eight times from 1998-2009, he assumed the managerial role in 2010 and has been in it ever since!

His record from 104 games as manager is ten wins, fifteen draws and seventy-nine defeats which is a win ratio of just 9.62%. Unsurprisingly Andorra have failed to qualify for any international tournament.

It’s hard to find a positive point in this Andorran squad but young Villarreal B keeper Iker Álvarez (21) could be a name to watch out for. If nothing less I do not think any manager could know his pool of players more than Koldo knows Andorra!
