Eurovision Favourites

United Kingdom – 2024 Eurovision Joint-Favourite

The United Kingdom are the early joint-favourite for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest at odds of 6/1 according to the latest Eurovision odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest the UK has a 14.3% chance of winning Eurovision 2024.

It’s worth noting that 23% of bets taken on the event so far have been for the UK according to Oddschecker.

The United Kingdom has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 65 times. They first took part in the contest back in 1957 and have entered every year since 1959.

Along with Sweden and the Netherlands, the UK is one of only 3 countries with Eurovision victories in 4 different decades. They won in 1967, 1969, 1976, 1981 and 1997. Their total of 5 victories is level with France, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands and behind only Ireland and Sweden (both on 7).

The UK is also considered one of the ‘Big Five’ countries, along with France, Germany, Italy and Spain. These countries automatically qualify for the final each year due to them being the biggest financial contributors to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

They’ve gone strong this year looking for success, enlisting the singing talents of former Years & Years singer Olly Alexander. Assisted by the BBC he has come out with some bold statements, saying that they’re going to win Eurovision 2024 with a commercial song that will reach #1 in the charts.

Ukraine – 2024 Eurovision Joint-Favourite

The other joint-favourite for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is Ukraine at odds of 6/1 according to the latest Eurovision odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Ukraine has a 14.3% chance of winning Eurovision 2024.

Ukraine have participated in the song contest on 18 occasions with their first appearance coming in 2003.

Ukraine, despite being a relative newcomer to the Eurovision stage when compared with the UK and Sweden, have performed consistently on the stage since their debut.

They won the contest in 2004, 2016 and 2022 with ‘Wild Dances’ by Ruslana, 2016 ‘1944’ by Jamala, and in 2022 with ‘Stefania’ by Kalush Orchestra. Thanks to their victory in 2022 they became the 1st country in the 21st century, and the 1st Eastern European country, to win the contest 3 times.

Kyiv has hosted the contest on two occasions. However, due to the war, they were unable to host the event last year and instead were replaced by second place from that year, the UK.

Ukraine will be thereabouts again for success this year if we are to go by the betting odds after finishing 6th place last year.

Sweden

The 2nd favourite for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is Sweden at odds of 7/1. Those odds suggest the country has a 12.5% chance of winning Eurovision 2024.

Sweden has partaken in the contest on 62 occasions with their 1st appearance coming in 1958.

Sweden is the only country with a Eurovision victory in 5 different decades. They won the contest in 1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015, 2023. Their total of 7 victories puts them as the joint most successful country in the history of the competition alongside Ireland.

Sweden’s 7th contest victory last year came as they brought back Loreen who had previously won the contest with them for the hit song “Euphoria” back in 2012. That song has been arguably one of – if not the most – successful Eurovision songs to break out into the mainstream in recent history.

Sweden are a Eurovision powerhouse and will be going all out to go clear of Ireland on the outright table and become the most successful country in Eurovision history.

Italy

The 4th favourite for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest is Italy at odds of 8/1. Those odds suggest the country has an 11.1% chance of winning Eurovision 2024.

Italy have participated in the contest on 48 occasions with their 1st appearance coming in 1956.

Italy was also one of the 7 countries that competed in the first contest, which took inspiration from the Sanremo Music Festival. Italy has won the contest on three occasions. Those wins came in 1964 with the song ‘Non ho l’età’, performed by Gigliola Cinquetti, 1990, ‘Insieme’ in 1992, written and performed by Toto Cutugno and in 2021 with the song ‘Zitti e buoni’, performed by Måneskin.

The song and artist to represent Italy at this year’s song contest will be selected on February 10th at Sanremo 2024.

Israel

Next up in the betting is Israel who are a 10/1 chance to win Eurovision 2024. Those odds suggest the country has a 9.1% chance of winning in Sweden this May.

Israel have taken part in the Eurovision on 45 occasions with their 1st appearance coming in 1973.

Israel are very consistent on the Eurovision stage having won the event on 4 occasions. Those victories came in 1978, 1979, 1998, and most recently in 2018 when the winner was ‘Toy’ performed by Netta and written by Doron Medalie and Stav Beger.

Due to the ongoing political conflict, many countries have come out saying that Israel should not be allowed to participate in this year’s contest. However, the contest organisers have stood firm with their involvement.

In terms of contest know-how, Israel are shrewd operators, last year they took the unique approach of not having the song sung live anywhere in advance of the semi-final, not appearing at any of the pre-parties. In the end that strategy served them pretty well as ‘Unicorn’ sung by Noa Kirel placed 3rd.

It would be foolish to rule out their chances, and Israel is already one of the punter’s favourites for success with 29% of the bets predicting an Israel victory per OddsChecker.

Ireland

If you’re looking for Ireland’s odds for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, they can be found at a massive 40/1. Those long odds suggest that the Emerald Isle has only a 2.4% chance of success in Eurovision 2024.

Ireland has made 56 appearances in the contest with the 1st coming in 1965. It’s been a poor few years for Ireland at the contest. However, they remain the joint most successful country in the competition with their 7 successes. Those wins came in 1970, 1980, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1996. Sweden equalled Ireland’s total of 7 song contests wins last year.

Wild Youth represented Ireland last year with the band failing to get past the semi-final stage. Could this year be different? Something suggests to me that it won’t be and the betting odds would agree with that too.
