Everton are 7/4 to be relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 season. Those odds suggest that Everton have a 36.4% chance of being relegated to the Championship.

Everton Points Deduction

The Merseyside club were handed a deduction of 10 points, the biggest points deduction in the history of the Premier League, this Friday. The deduction is owing to a breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Sky Sports News are reporting that ‘the charge related to interest payments on the cost of building the club’s new stadium’. According to the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105m in a season and Everton have been adjudged to have lost more than that total in the 2021/22 season.

Everton have released a statement saying that they will appeal the points deduction given to them by the Premier League. The club have said in that statement that the 10-point deduction is ‘wholly disproportionate’ and an ‘unjust sporting sanction’.

Impact of Points Deduction On Everton

Everton were involved in a massive relegation battle last season. They narrowly avoided the drop on the final day of the season.

This season the club didn’t get off to a great start in the Premier League either with just 14 points from their opening 12 Premier League games. Although they weren’t on a blistering pace, that tally of 14 points was good enough for 14th place in the table and 9 points above the relegation zone.

The 10-point deduction imposed by the Premier League now means that Everton drop to 19th place in the Premier League table with just 4 points to their credit.

Their relegation odds of 7/4 make them the fourth most likely team to be relegated to the Championship at the end of this season. 18th place Sheffield United are deemed an almost certainty for the drop at odds of 1/6.

17th place Luton Town at odds of 2/9, despite not being in the drop zone at the moment, are also judged to be more likely to get relegated this season than Everton. The only other team who our traders think are more likely to be relegated from the Premier League this season is Burnley at odds of 8/13.

Despite the points deduction, the Toffees can take hope from their improved form in recent games. Sean Dyche’s side have only been beaten once in their last five league outings and that came against Liverpool in a game where they were down a man for the majority of the match. In the other four games over that span, they were winners in three along with one draw.

Everton’s next game comes after the international break when they will play Manchester United at home.
