Everton vs Liverpool predictions, Maupay debut & Iwobi influence

The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool is the perfect opportunity for new signing Neal Maupay this weekend.

That’s according to Alan Stubbs, who played over 150 games for the Toffees in the 2000s, and this week spoke to BoyleSports to preview Saturday’s 12.30pm kick-off in the Premier League at Goodison Park. Have a read below!

Predictions for the Merseyside derby?

I’m hoping Everton win but I know how difficult that’s going to be. The fans give me hope as they will play a massive part and make Goodison Park very intimidating for Liverpool.

Liverpool also haven’t started the season in the way that we’ve come to know of over the last few seasons.

Every Everton player has to be an 8/10 to get anything from the game on Saturday. Anything can happen in football, but they’ll have to put in their best performance under Frank Lampard if they want to get a result.

What type of derby will this be?

It won’t be an open derby. Everton’s problems this season have all come because of a lack of forward options.

Frank Lampard is in a difficult position with only one recognised striker and the fact that he hasn’t been playing tells you everything you need to know about where he is in the pecking order.

The fact that they’ve not been able to call upon Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the reason that Everton haven’t been able to win games yet.

Where do you see the key battles being won and lost?

Antony Gordon’s pace on the counter-attack is vital to the way that Everton play so he will be very important on Saturday – not just offensively, but defensively thwarting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s attacks.

Everton’s biggest challenge will be to keep the Liverpool front three quiet. I think Frank will go three at the back and try to smother the attacking threats and stay in the game as long as he can.

Will Conor Coady’s experience get the better of Darwin Nunez?

Roberto Firmino’s form over the last couple of games has given Jurgen Klopp a real dilemma and I wouldn’t be surprised if Firmino starts at the weekend.

To throw Darwin Nunez into the boiling pot of a Merseyside derby in his first game back [after suspension] is a risk.

How effective do you see new signing Neal Maupay being?

The Merseyside derby is the perfect game for him to start his Everton career.

In Neal Maupay, with Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray on either wing, immediately Everton are a threat. He’ll make the right runs which Everton have lacked.

I’ve felt sorry for Dwight McNeil when he’s played because they have players that don’t know what they’re doing.

Alex Iwobi has become a new player of late – what is that down to?

Iwobi has been head and shoulders above every Everton player and has carried the team.

He’s been a focal point of everything that Everton have done well and has been a leader.

His work-rate has been fantastic and it’s like we’re watching a different player from the one we first saw in an Everton shirt and that is down to Lampard.
