Fulham vs Chelsea Preview

Fulham’s Form

Fulham, following their promotion to the Premier League before last season, had a more than respectable season in 2022/23.

They finished 10th and in the top half of the table, seven points clear of Crystal Palace below them in eleventh. Along with that league run they reached the Quarter-Final of the FA Cup before being eliminated by Manchester United

After Fulham’s brilliant first season back in the Premier League, it was always going to be interesting to see how they approached the summer transfer window. They brought in a total of seven first-team signings including experienced EPL stars like Raúl Jiménez, Alex Iwobi and Adama Traoré. However, their talismanic striker Aleksandar Mitrović left to sign for Al Hilal after demanding the transfer.

Fulham started this season in average form with wins against Brentford and Hoffenheim along with defeats against Chelsea and Fulham. They’re currently sitting in 11th place six games into the season with eight points accumulated.

In all competitions Fulham has a record of two wins and one draw in their previous three games.

Chelsea’s Form

Chelsea had a horrible 22/23 season where they finished 12th in the league. That was the club’s first time in the bottom half of the table since the 95/96 season when they were managed by Glenn Hoddle. The revolving door at manager can be pinpointed as the primary cause for the struggles last season.

Blues fans will be hoping that new manager Mauricio Pochettino will be the man to bring them back to Champions League football this season.

There were many comings and goings at Stamford Bridge in the most recent transfer window. They brought in six signings for over £200 million making it over £800 million spent in the last two seasons and counting!

Expectations levels are always high at Chelsea and rightfully so given the amount of money being invested. Things haven’t quite happened for The Bridge faithful just yet though with their five-point total from their opening six league games just good enough for 14th in the table.

Chelsea have suffered defeats against West Ham, Nottingham Forest and most recently 0-1 against Aston Villa in the early stage of this Premier League campaign.

Pochettino will need to turn the tide fast or questions about his tenure will promptly follow. However, it should be noted that per UnderStat Chelsea’s Expected Points total should have them fifth. So perhaps their luck is due to turn sooner rather than later.

Fulham v Chelsea Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Fulham 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea have had a poor start to their season, while Fulham will largely be happy with where they are in the table having taken points off Arsenal, Luton Town and Crystal Palace along with solid cup form.

However, when we look at the Expected Points table Chelsea are fifth while Fulham are fourth from bottom. Thus, there is an indication early in the season that their league table positions don’t tell the full story.

I’m expecting Chelsea to win a relatively low-scoring game in the West London Derby which might kick-start their season.

Best Bet: Goal Bands 2-3 at EVS
