Heskey Defends Robertson In Wake of Criticism From ex-Liverpool Player

Speaking to BoyleSports, Emile Heskey has defended Liverpool left back Andy Robertson after criticism from another ex-Liverpool player.

Heskey, who scored 39 goals in 150 appearances at Liverpool, has pinpointed where the club need to strengthen in the January transfer window while giving his support to the quality that Andy Robertson brings to the team.

The now Head of Football Development for Leicester City Women has also had his say on Liverpool’s Premier League title prospects for the 2023/24 season, predicted the Premier League top four at the end of the season and shared his outlook for the future of the club.

Liverpool January Transfer Targets

I wouldn’t say I had any specific names in mind for January signings, but I would say that…

…Liverpool need help as far as their defence is concerned.

They’ve got their midfield balance right with the likes of Mac Allister, Endo, and Dominik Szoboszlai, so they’re covered in that department. I’d say they’re looking a bit thin in terms of the depth of their defence.

I’d like to see another centre-back and another right-back come in. I know Joe Gomez can play right-back, but he doesn’t play enough and, for me, he’s not sharp enough. I suppose he’d improve if he’d play more, though.

Heskey On Pennant Calling Andy Robertson Liverpool’s Only Weak Link

Wow. I’m not sure about calling Andy Robertson a weak link. He’s a fantastic player and I’m not sure what Jermaine meant by that.

Robertson’s stats are great, even if he’s a much more attack-minded player. His defensive stats aren’t the best, but he’s certainly above average.

Kostas Tsimikas is a solid backup option, too. I don’t know why Pennant has pinpointed Robertson! I’d look at adding to the depth in the centre-back department instead.

I think Robertson is one of the best full-backs in the league!

Pennant was a winger, so perhaps he’s talking about the kind of player he’d like to have in the side.

Darwin Núñez Can Score 20 Goals A Season

I think Darwin Nunez has the potential to score more than 20 goals a season.

He’s getting the catches and he always makes the correct runs. He has the opportunity, and the rest will be up to him.

Comparisons To Fernando Torres

You can’t knock his work rate and his willingness to make things happen. He just needs to perfect that last little bit. I think he’s a similar player to Fernando Torres, but Fernando went in with a lot more confidence.

Darwin’s aim should be to match Fernando’s level, and he’ll then look to better what Torres did.

What Núñez Needs To Do To Reach Level Of Torres

Darwin will have to work on his finishing and develop his hold-up play if he wants to match Torres.

Nunez is certainly getting better, though, and I’d say he only has to work on that.

VAR Decision Likely Won’t Impact Liverpool’s Title Chances

I wouldn’t say that the VAR decision at Tottenham will hurt Liverpool’s title chances. Liverpool will have to push to over ninety points if they want to take City all the way.

City don’t draw a lot of games. They may lose a few times, but they win so many. They’re ruthless.

Liverpool Title Contenders Next Season

I can’t see Liverpool pushing to this level this season – I think that’ll happen next season.

I think Liverpool are bedding in too many players to really push City this season. They’ll need a good season to adjust first. Next season will be all about the league, though!

Heskey’s Premier League 2023/24 Top Four Prediction

It’s a tough one! I’d go for Man City, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Tottenham.

Why Newcastle Will Make The Top Four

Newcastle are riding a wave right now and they look so confident.

We all know what Eddie Howe is capable of, but we haven’t had the chance to see what he’s really about. Until now. He learned a lot from Bournemouth, but now he’s with better players and I think this is his time.

Why Man United Won’t Make The Top Four

I think Manchester United have too much turmoil to make the top-four.

They can use that as an excuse!
