Jaap Stam On If Roy Keane Was The Best Captain He Played With

Roy Keane is a polarising figure in the football world but few people disagree that the Cork man was a great captain.

Here at BoyleSports we got the chance to speak with his former Man United teammate Jaap Stam so we wanted his take on if Keane ranks as the best captain he ever played with. The Dutch man also played in an AC Milan side captained by Paolo Maldini which makes his answer all the more interesting.

Stam also gave us insight on what next for Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, World Cup predictions and if Edwin van der Sar should join Man United as a director.

Was Roy Keane the best captain you’ve ever played with?

I can assure you, Roy Keane was the most demanding captain I played with.

Of course, I played with Paolo Maldini too who was exceptional as a player and a person. Roy Keane was one of the best captains that I played with.

He was very demanding and it was so good for us as players. If you look at the standards he set for himself and his team, he was definitely the best. Maldini was a great captain as well but he had a different personality and was less vocal than Keane.

Is Roberto Martinez the right man to continue leading Belgium forward?

Roberto is a very good manager, he has a philosophy and knows how he wants to play football. Belgium have several older players now and they need to switch things up and bring in some young, quality players if they’re available. On paper, they have an interesting team, but on the pitch, they’re not good enough.

Eventually, I can see Vincent Kompany becoming Belgium’s manager because he’s been doing well.

He’s gone into management the right way because you need to learn at different levels and work with different players to eventually manage the national team.

What he’s doing now with Burnley is good and if he keeps going then I’m sure he can also make the next step to the Premier League.

Who will win the Golden Boot at the World Cup and which team will win the tournament?

France have a very good team and Kylian Mbappe is a main contender for the Golden Boot but I still think Lionel Messi is up there, with Ronaldo too. Cody Gakpo is doing very well and hopefully, he can keep showing his quality for Holland but Mbappe has a special quality that makes him very interesting.

Kylian has this personality trait which makes him think he’s better than everyone else, which is a positive as a footballer, but It’s going to be interesting to see who will win the trophy.

Spain have a squad of young players who play exciting football. I would like Argentina to win it too because I like Lionel Messi and I want him to win the tournament. I’m not saying Holland have the best players, but they’re an outsider and I hope they do well.

Would Edwin van der Sar be a good fit for Sporting Director at Man United?

I think it would be very good for Manchester United if they bring back Edwin van der Sar. He’s been doing a very good job at Ajax, but I’m not sure what he wants to do next.

I think it’s always good to bring former players in.

Manchester United eventually want to get back to being in the Champions League and competing for the league title every year so they need to bring in quality people who can do the business and if Edwin can do that then Manchester United need to go for it.
