The Course

We’re at TPC Deere Run in Illinois, a 7,289 yards par 71 with three par 5s which has hosted since the year 2000.

It’s one of the easiest courses on the PGA Tour. It’s going to be a birdie fest and you’ll need to be good with the wedges and putter.

The Favourite

Webb Simpson (12/1) is a short price and he’s had neck problems this year. He’s had a confidence issue with his irons and he’s had to switch back to cavity backs from blades. His short game hasn’t been great this year either.

Headline Tip

Adam Hadwin (16/1) is chasing an Open Championship spot and there are three places up for grabs in the John Deere.

Hadwin has played some great golf this year – 9th at Sawgrass, 7th in the Valspar, 4th in the Texas Open and more recently – 18th in The Memorial, 35th in the Canadian Open and 7th in the US Open.

This is magnificent form compared to most of this week’s field. He was 18th and 8th on his two John Deere starts, he holes a lot of putts and I think he should be favourite.

Next Best

I was maybe expecting a bit too much from Denny McCarthy (22/1) last week and I can forgive his missed cut at the Travelers owing to some mental fatigue from a good US Open, where he was 7th. He’s an amazing putter and five of the last ten John Deere champions were Tour maidens like McCarthy.

Another PGA Tour maiden is Nick Hardy (28/1). He was one of my ones to watch at the start of the year and he’s a really aggressive player.

Some injury problems have blighted his rookie campaign and he was missing lots of cuts, but he dropped back down to the Korn Ferry Tour and he lost in a playoff. He has followed that up with 35th at the Canadian Open, 14th in the US Open and 8th last week at the Travelers Championship.

It’s a home state gig for Hardy, he’s an Illinois University graduate, he won the Illinois State Amateur Championship in 2016 with a -26 total. So he loves a birdie fest and he’s made the cut on both times he’s played in this tournament before.
