All-Ireland-winning Limerick man Dowling thinks Clare will get the job done, but singled out one key battle which may be enough to swing the tie either way.

“This is going to be a very close game. The perception out there is that Limerick will have enough to take care of Galway, so I think people are really looking forward to this game as it should be a cracker,” he said.

“Clare got their hangover out of the way after the Munster final when they beat Wexford. It’s a sign of a good team when you win a game that you are not going too well in – Clare found a way to win.

“Kilkenny were Kilkenny in the Leinster final, they were really good against Galway. They shut them down and didn’t let them get into a flow at all.

“This is an All-Ireland semi-final now and the big difference between Clare and Galway is that Galway are very physical, but Clare have serious pace all over the pitch. How Kilkenny are going to try and counteract that will be interesting to see.

“Wexford man-marked Tony Kelly the last day and it worked for large periods of the game. I think they will put Mikey Butler on him – he did it to Cathal Mannion in the Leinster final.

“Wherever Mannion went, he followed him everywhere ad going to bed every night this week he will be thinking of Tony Kelly and what he can do to shut him down. If he nullifies him it will be a big plus for Kilkenny. But Clare have good players all over the field.

“Kilkenny at 6/4 are serious value and the draw at 15/2 may turn out to be even better value, but I think Clare will win…narrowly.”
