Shane Dowling has warned his native Limerick to be on their guard against Galway to avoid an upset in Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final.

The Treaty are odds-on favourites to get their hands on the Liam MacCarthy cup for a third successive year at Croke Park, but Dowling has said he is wary of Leinster champions Galway raising their game with a place in the All-Ireland final up for grabs.

“I hope the odds are right because they point to a convincing victory for Limerick – I’m not so sure it will be though,” Dowling told BoyleSports.

“There is no getting away from it – on all form we’ve seen this year in the championship, Limerick are deserving favourites. If they play to form, it’s hard to see anything other than a win.

“Galway were lucky to get over the line in the quarter-final, Cork should have beaten them as they had more chances, but just didn’t take them.

“But Galway find themselves in a semi-final with a chance to showcase what they have. They have serious players on their team, they haven’t played to their full potential yet this year and if they can bring out that potential, it can be a very close game.

“Daithí Burke is going to have the job of marking Aaron Gillane and at the other end Conor Whelan will probably be picked up by Mike Casey. Whelan and Casey are two big strong men going at it, so it’ll be interesting to see how those match-ups pan out.

“But Galway will probably go man-on-man and it could leave a lot of space on the inside line. If Kyle Hayes plays like he’s been playing all year he’ll probably drift out the field, leaving Seamus Flanagan and Aaron Gillane inside.

“I do think they’ll get a lot of space and Daithí Burke will have a tough battle.”
