Kilkenny’s Form

Kilkenny have built on a strong League campaign at the start of this year with another impressive Championship which has seen them book a spot in the All-Ireland Final against Limerick for the second consecutive year.

Despite strong performances in the National League there were question marks around the Cats coming into this year’s Leinster Championship after they lost by 11 points to Limerick in the Division 1 National League Final this April. Prior to that result they were seen as Limerick’s biggest challengers for Liam MacCarthy but the nature with which Limerick put them away saw them drift out in the odds market for this year’s All-Ireland.

The Leinster Championship is pretty weak this year so there weren’t many tests for Kilkenny on their way to yet another Leinster Hurling Final. Their biggest test came against Galway in the round robin stage where they were held to a draw at home.

Galway were the opposition again in the Leinster Final. This turned out to be a cracking game and it was the Cats who capitalised on panic in the Galway defence in the dying moments to score a last gasp goal that won them this year’s Leinster Championship and booked their spot in another All-Ireland semi-final.

Beaten Munster finalists Clare were Kilkenny’s semi-final opponents. The Banner men came into this game highly fancied by many of the hurling experts. Although memories of last year’s semi-final between the two teams where Kilkenny hammered Clare would have given the Cats players extra confidence ahead of this game. A classic ensued and Kilkenny, thanks to an incredible save from Eoin Murphy, advanced to the All-Ireland Final on a scoreline of 1-25 to 1-22.

So, How’s The Form?

Kilkenny’s form is strong heading into this year’s All-Ireland Final against Limerick. The Cats recovered from a hammering at the hands of Limerick in the League Final to book their spot in a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland decider.

Kilkenny have played some great hurling in their last two games against Galway and Clare which will see them going into this final full of confidence. They will need to maintain those performance levels and even up them slightly if they are to have a chance in this game.

Limerick’s Form

Limerick have not been the typical Limerick so far this Championship season. They haven’t dominated opponents on their path to this year’s All-Ireland Final. However, despite not playing their best hurling they find themselves as Munster Champions once again.

Perhaps that is all you need to know about how good this Limerick team is; even without their best stuff they are still the best team in the land.

They were close to being knocked out of this year’s Championship early and had the sliotar bounced differently against Cork in the Gaelic Grounds then we might just be writing post mortems rather than semi-final previews. Limerick, as they always seem to, did just enough to get over the line that day.

It was a similar case in the Munster Final against Clare, a team that had already beaten them in the round robin stage of the Munster Championship. If Clare had their shooting hurls with them then they could well have beaten the Treaty County in that Munster Final.

Last time out for Limerick was their All-Ireland semi-final against Galway. The Tribesmen were playing the better hurling for the opening 25 minutes of the game and at that stage it looked like Limerick could have been in a spot of bother. However, after a timely Nickie Quaid injury break the Treaty County made a tactical switch up and quickly turned the moment of the game. From there Limerick never looked back and cruised home to a 9-point victory.

So, How’s The Form?

By Limerick’s highest standards the form hasn’t been convincing this season on their path to the All-Ireland Final. If we’re being honest, the Treaty County look like they are beatable this year (they’ve already lost to Clare).

However, their experience and know-how in the dying minutes of games has consistently seen them do just enough to get over the finish line.

Kilkenny v Limerick Betting Odds

Kilkenny – 5/2

Limerick – 4/9

The Draw – 8/1

Handicap: Limerick – 4 @ 21/20

Limerick go into this game as the commanding favourites at odds of 4/9 in the betting. Kilkenny on the other hand are the 5/2 underdogs which means they will have to overcome the odds to win this year’s Liam MacCarthy. Meanwhile the draw after 70 minutes is priced up at odds of 8/1.

In the handicap betting Limerick have been installed as -4 point favourites at odds of 21/20. That means Limerick will need to win by 5 or more points to overcome that handicap.
