BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Favourites

Coolavanny Hoffa – 8/1

The Michael J O’Donovan-trained Coolavanny Hoffa remains the favourite to win the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby and his odds have dipped into single figures at 8/1 (from 10/1) in recent weeks.

No surprises there though with the son of Droopys Sydney and Coolavanny Ella posting 28:23 in a trial around Shelbourne and a breathtaking 27:83 the previous month around Cork.  From his 16 races, he has crossed the winning line 9 times and has only been out of the money places 3 times.

Swords Rex – 12/1

The Graham Holland-trained Swords Rex is the joint-second favourite to win the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby with his odds currently 10/1 to land the biggest prize in Greyhound Racing.

Another son of Droopys Sydney along with the Dam being Starry Display, Swords Rex is a phenom on track and one of the sights to watch in racing to watch. From 38 races, Rex has won a staggering 27 times and has only been out of the money 7 times. It’s no surprise with that sort of consistency that the dog has won €122,235 in Prize-Money and even more remarkable is that could be practically double had Rex not placed fourth in the English Greyhound Derby.

Ballinbola Ed – 12/1

The Pat Buckley-trained Ballinbola Ed is the joint-second favourite to win the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby with his odds currently 10/1 to land the biggest prize in Greyhound Racing.

The son of Confident Rankin and Dolls Lady will be another major player in the coming weeks especially if he can replicate the form which had him crossing the finishing line in Towcester in 28:97! From 30 races, From 30 races, Ed has won 20 times and has only been out of the money 5 times, accumulating prize-money total so far of €60,445

2023 Fastest 550s – Shelbourne Park

As we get closer to the draw on Monday, excitement and anticipation is building, so we are going to look at some of the key stats that could come into play in the coming weeks!

The Irish Greyhound Derby is run over 503m/550 yards in Shelbourne Park.

The Graham Holland-trained son of Gaytime Hawk and Gaytime Derval,  Gaytime Hugo has posted the fastest 550 time in Shelbourne Park at the beginning of July going around the track in a breathtaking 29.26, Hugo is currently 16/1 to win the Irish Greyhound Derby.

Trinity Junior the Peter Cronin-trained son of Laughil Blake and Oi Oi Upenalty went fast on the same night stopping the clock at 29.34 and can still be gotten at 25/1 for the Derby.

Ballymac Walt the son of Ballymac Cashout and Ballymac Diva and trained by Liam Dowling had a 29.39 on the very same night as the other two and is currently 25/1

Most Wins

Bobsleigh Dream will be looking to become the last lady since Susie Sapphire won the Irish Greyhound Derby and her credentials are good. Over an average distance of 485m, she has won the most times in 2023 with 7 Wins from 10 Races and can be currently gotten at 33/1.

The aforementioned Ballinbola Ed at 10/1 is the second most successful hound with 6 wins from 7 races and a staggering Win-Rate of 85% over an average distance of 526m

Galloping Sydney at 66/1 is another interesting sort with 8 wins from 14 races over an average distance of 485m.

Trap Statistics Shelbourne Park

From 66 Full-Field Races over the 503m/550-yard trip in Shelbourne Park in 2023, it shows some interesting results.

Trap 2 and Trap 5 have the highest Win-Rate at 23% which suggests the dog closest to the rails may not have the advantage of getting a clear run as you would first expect

Trap 1 has a Win-Rate of 20%, but as you go wider there is a clear disadvantage for outside trappers with Trap 3 having a Win-Rate of 12%, Trap 4 at 11% and Trap 6 at 12%
