Premier League Relegation Betting Favourites

Luton Town

Luton Town are the strong favourites at odds of 1/3 to be one of the three relegated teams for this upcoming 2023/24 Premier League season. Those odds imply that there is a 75% chance that Luton will be relegated from the Premier League this season.

It is hard to disagree with the odds makers here who clearly think that Luton will be struggling to avoid the drop in their debut season in the Premier League. Luton of course won the Championship Play-Off Final against Coventry City to secure the final promotion spot to England’s top flight. It was a fairytale ending to their season which had been much talked about in the press due to their unique stadium which wasn’t viewed as up to Premier League standards.

I think Luton will unfortunately be relegated this season as these odds suggest. They have had a very quiet summer since getting promoted with only four signings made in the transfer market. Most notably they brought in Tahith Chong from Birmingham and Irish winger Chiedozie Ogbene. Unless they can bolster the squad more before the end of the transfer window then I can’t see them being able to cope with the step up in class to the Premier League.

Verdict? Relegation – 20th place finish

Sheffield United

The second favourites to be relegated at the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season are Sheffield United at odds of 8/11. Those odds imply that there is a 57.9% chance of Sheffield being relegated in this upcoming season.

The Blades gained promotion to the Premier League courtesy of a 2nd place in the Championship last season. They finished way behind winners Burnley (10 points) but also comfortably ahead of the Play-Off places (11 points).

Sheffield, like Luton Town, have not been busy in this transfer market. A slow summer transfer window will likely count against them as they will struggle to make the step up to the Premier League standard.

The three signings that the Blades have made so far this summer are;

Bénie Traoré, a young Ivory Coast centre-forward from Hacken in Sweden.

Anis Slimane, a 22-year-old Tunisian-Danish midfielder from Brondby IF in Denmark.

Yasser Larouci, a 22-year-old French-Algerian left-back from Troyes in France.

I doubt these additions will be enough to see this side avoid the drop.

Verdict? Relegation – 19th place finish

Bournemouth

Next up in our Premier League relegation odds is Bouremouth who have been installed at odds of 7/4 to be relegated this upcoming Premier League season. Those odds imply that Bournemouth have a 36.4% chance of being relegated this season.

Based on those odds Bournemouth are the most likely team to be relegated that played in the Premier League last season. The Cherries finished 15th in last season’s Premier League table, 5 points clear of the drop as they got the results needed down the stretch to keep themselves up.

I suspect they could be in relegation trouble again this season. However, Bournemouth will be boosted by an influx of talent after a busy summer transfer window. Their most notable signings are CAM Hamed Junior Traore for €25m, left-back Milos Kerkez for €17m, midfielder Romain Faivre for €15m and winger Justin Kluivert for €11m.

These players should make an immediate impact on this Bournemouth team and in my opinion make them a better squad than many of the other squads expected to battle it out towards the bottom of the table.

Verdict? Stay up – 15th place

Burnley

Last season’s Championship winners Burnley are 2/1 to be relegated from the Premier League this season. Those odds imply that there is a 33.3% chance of Burnley getting relegated at the end of this season.

Last season they were far and away the best team in the Championship but of course the Premier League is a whole different ball game. Manager Vincent Kompany of course knows this and has been busy in the transfer market to ensure this club have the talent in their ranks required to stay up this season.

Among the top rivals for Burnley in this transfer market are centre-forward Zeki Amdouni for €18m, goalkeeper James Trafford for €17m, centre-back Jordan Beyer for €15m and Nathan Redmond on a free transfer.

The Clarets are also not sure of Premier League quality players from players already in their squad from last season. Josh Brownhill and Josh Cullen give this team quality in midfield while Wout Weghorst returns from his loan at Man United although there are of course question marks around his goal scoring abilities.

Verdict? 16th place

Nottingham Forest

The next team in the Premier League relegation odds is Nottingham Forest at odds of 5/2. Those odds imply that there is a 28.6% chance that Forest are relegated this season.

This team were in the Premier League last season where they were in a relegation dogfight but did enough down the stretch to finish in 16th and avoid the drop by 4 points.

I think they will be in another relegation battle this season after a quiet summer transfer window.

Verdict? Relegation – 18th place

Other Relegation Candidates

Among the other top candidates for relegation in the upcoming 2023/24 Premier League season are Everton who were in a shock relegation battle right until the final minutes of their 2022/23 campaign. Everton are 3/1 to be relegated next season but you would think surely they have enough talent in their squad to improve on last season’s dismal season.

Wolves are another team that could be in trouble this season and have been given odds of 7/2 to be relegated this upcoming season. The departure of star midfielder Ruben Neves will be a massive loss which could have a significant negative impact on this team.

On the other end of the table is the race for the Premier League title this upcoming season. We previewed the chances of all the favourites in our Premier League League Winner Odds post.
