Irish Premier Division 2024 Betting Favourites

Shamrock Rovers – 4/5

Rovers have dominated Irish Football since their 2020 Premier Division victory winning four titles in a row. So it’s no surprise that Shamrock Rovers have been installed as 4/5 early favourites for the 2024 season according to the latest football odds at BoyleSports.

The commencement of the League of Ireland season is dawning upon us quicker than you would suspect, with the Leinster Senior Cup about to commence this month, we’re now only 38 days away from the first round of league fixtures.

Thus far during the off-season some crucial business has been done by the club with re-signings like Gaffney and Byrne, along with additions like Honohan, and Burns and getting Poom back in on loan their squad looks in a solid position. Although the loss of Gannon to Shelbourne could be a loss, they have the core of their pure squad still under contract too.

For me their Premier Division credentials will come down to two things, (1) Whether they choose to prioritise the much more lucrative allure of European Football this season and (2) whether they keep their motivation and focus levels up to win another league.

Right now they’re worthy favourites for the league and I suspect Stephen Bradley could have another ace in the pack signing or two in the store in the next month!

Derry City – 9/4

Derry City have long been touted as the ones to end the Shamrock Rovers’ domestic domination and their 2022 FAI Cup Final success showed us a glimpse of what this great club could be capable of. However, that as of yet has failed to translate into a League success but are priced at 9/4 to finally achieve that goal in 2024!

Due to their wealthy owners/backers, the club were very fortunate to have their strong squad core under contract for the 2024 season including the likes of Maher, Doherty, Duffy and Kavanagh. Their sole winter window transfer has been Daniel Kelly from Dundalk, although the story of the off-season is looking for near completion with the huge signing of Hoban from Dundalk looking imminent.

Derry in 2023 had only the fourth-best attack in the league, but the acquisition of Hoban could be the final piece in the jigsaw for league success. I’m still uncertain about them keeping a squad that largely underperformed last season, so I still don’t fancy them for 2024 glory at 9/4!

St Patrick’s Athletic – 5/1

The Supersaints marched their way to FAI Cup glory in 2023 after their 1-3 victory over Bohemians which capped off a season which started rather poorly with a trophy and with that comes greater expectations of a league title charge under Jon Daly in 2024.

Of all the clubs during the off-season, they’ve had the most successful window so far (in my opinion) bringing in the Kavanaghs (Brandon and Cian), Keating, Bolger, Keeley and most recently keeper Piteluga on loan from Liverpool their recruitment has been thorough and balanced in all areas so far.

That being said, Doyle and Murphy will be big losses with the departure of protegé Curtis likely to be confirmed this month. They may need to pull one more rabbit from their hats with an RB signing before justifying my thought that they’re major dark horse contenders for a league title this year at 5/1!

Shelbourne – 20/1

Shels continued their rise back up the ladder in Irish Football last season with their fourth-place finish under Damien Duff, confirming their European Qualification for this season following Bohemians Cup final defeat.

Duff has never been one to bat around the bush with his words for matters on and off the field but following his battle with the former Hull investors over perceived differences in Sporting and Recruitment direction, it was always going to be an interesting watch during the off-season. They’ve brought in LOI experience with the likes of Ward, Gannon, Burt and Williams along with players like John O’Sullivan who has a huge point to prove. However, the loss of the Hull loanees and Jack Moylan to Lincoln will be a tough void to fill in the squad.

Shelbourne are on an upward curve and I do believe they’re under the right man Damien Duff to continue that curve. However, the added squad pressure in Europe and the jump in quality means they might have to settle for European progression and league-table consolidation this season.

Bohemians – 33/1

Bohemians started last season like a steamroll train and it had plenty of supporters dreaming of a shocking title charge. However, what started with great promise fell off the wheels and culminated in their FAI Cup final defeat against St Patrick’s Athletic last November.

That being said, it has been a scattered off-season for the club and with the loss of their top-scorer Afolabi to the Belgian side Kortrijk it’s going to take a mammoth month by the board for them to turn the tide in the window. Although the additions of Rooney from Drogheda and the return of Cornwall from America aren’t poor additions by any means.

Bohs are a club who do plenty of things right and off the field, but the gulf between themselves and the top teams in Ireland very much remains, something that I can’t see changing in 2024.

Who won the 2023 Irish Premier Division?

The 2023 season was the 39th season of the League of Ireland Premier Division top-flight since it was established in 1985.

Shamrock Rovers won their 4th consecutive title and 21st overall. That title victory saw them qualify for the 2024–25 Champions League first qualifying round.

The 2023 FAI Cup winners St Patrick’s Athletic qualified for the 2024–25 Conference League second qualifying round and the league runners-up Derry City and fourth finishers Shelbourne qualified for the 2024–25 Conference League first qualifying round.

Galway won the 2023 First Division gaining promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division this season. They are joined by Waterford who beat 9th placed Cork City in the relegation playoff. UCD were also relegated from the Premier Division after finishing bottom of the table last season.
