That win means they have earned eight points in their last five matches,  but that victory effectively knocked Dundalk out of the title race with them now eleven points behind, a similar victory in this one would put them seven points ahead of Bohemians making them a long shot too.

Bohemians occupy fourth place in the league with three draws and two wins in their last five league games but with nine games remaining in the league season, if they’re to stand any chance of a shock title victory they need to win this game and cut the gap between themselves and Shamrock Rovers to four-points.

Dundalk lie in sixth place with nine games left in their league season. Following, their 1-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers last Friday their feint title hopes are gone. However, the Dundalk faithful will still harbour expectations of qualifying for Europe and a victory in this one would keep them well in contention.

Derry City will be disappointed with their 2-2 draw against Bohemians last Friday Night, which means they have only won two of their last five league games. Derry City have a game in hand over every team in the league (except UCD who they face) and could’ve potentially reduced the gap between themselves and Shamrock Rovers to two points, but now if they win the game the gap can only become four points (by their doing anyway).

Drogheda ended their three-match winless run last Friday Night with a massive 3-1 victory against Cork City in the relegation dogfight. They have climbed up to seventh place, two points ahead of Sligo Rovers, victory in this one (which seems likely) would put them very much closer to safety with eight league games remaining. It could get even better for Kevin Doherty’s side if they can overcome Bohemians in their FAI Cup Quarter-Final.

UCD have eight games remaining in the Premier Division before their inevitable relegation back to the First Division. In their most recent game, they put up a spirited fight before losing to St Patrick’s Athletic. It’s all about building for next season for the Students now.

Shelbourne earned their seemingly inevitable 0-1 victory against Sligo Rovers last Saturday, through a Mark Coyle goal in the 40th minute that was rather fortunate to go in. That victory took Shelbourne up to fifth place and still with an outside chance of qualifying for Europe next season. They probably need another big win in this one to keep them in touch with the teams above them, but Pats will be much stiffer opposition.

St Patrick’s Athletic are currently Shamrock Rovers’ closest challengers trailing them by four points as we get closer to the business end of the season. Last weekend could’ve been catastrophic for their title credentials, but they managed a 0-1 win over UCD despite having fewer shots on goal and only one shot on target. They need another win here to stay in touch.

Cork City have been truly awful this season, even with referee mistakes contributing to their 3-1 defeat at Drogheda. The reality is that performance levels were simply not up to scratch as they haven’t been all season, bar maybe one or two players that is. With eight official league games remaining, they look seemingly destined for a relegation playoff date to secure their Premier Division status. That is unless they can find some sort of form and Sligo Rovers are one of few teams in the division I can see them getting points from right now.

Sligo Rovers have four in their last five but have lost their last three league games which has seen them fall to eighth on the table. They may be in poor form, but a victory here would put them nine points ahead of Cork City with seven games remaining and would all but secure their Premier Division status for next season.
