Meadow The Underdog While Maguire Backed For Olympic Gold

Stephanie Meadow will be among the outsiders when she tees it up in Tokyo in search of an Olympic medal next month.

The Jordanstown woman has two professional career wins to date and finished inside the top 20 in the first major of the season at this year’s ANA Inspiration, but has struggled for form in recent weeks with four missed cuts in her last five outings.

Meadow’s second Olympic appearance was confirmed last week but she faces odds of 350/1 to finish on top of the 60-strong field at the Kasumigaseki Country Club just outside Tokyo in early August.

It’s a different story for Cavan’s Leona Maguire, who has been backed down to 25/1 from 28/1 for the gold medal,

…putting her within striking distance of the favourites.

She fell just short of making her LPGA Tour breakthrough recently when finishing second to Nelly Korda in the Meijer Classic and it’s the American who is the current frontrunner for gold in Tokyo at 11/2.

Rory McIlroy meanwhile is a popular 9/1 from 12/1 second favourite to take home a gold medal in the Men’s event, with Shane Lowry also prominent in the betting having already shortened into 22/1 from 25/1.
