Newcastle’s Form

Newcastle entered the season on an upward trajectory, going from eleventh in the league to fourth place last season under Eddie Howe qualifying the club for any stage of the competition for the first time since the 2003/04 season when they were eliminated at the Third Qualifying Round Stage on penalties by Partizan.

Their pre-season went well also with them earning five wins, two draws and zero defeats including victories against Brighton and Florentina seemed to confirm their imminent upward curve again this season.

The only real departure in the summer was Allan Saint-Maximin and Chris Wood, essentially all of their first-team squad from 22/23 remains besides those two. Newcastle recruited a lot for their academy during the window but the additions of Tonali, Barnes, Livramento and Hall on loan certainly strengthened their squad.

Following a slow start to their season, Newcastle following a 5-1 victory against Aston Villa lost their next three league games. However, since that run, they’ve won three from three in the league scoring eleven goals and conceding none. They earned a point in Milan on their opening Champions League Night and knocked Manchester City out of the EFL Cup.

PSG’s Form

The Parisians have been serial underachievers in Europe no matter how much money they spend seemingly for years now. Last season despite a star-studded side with the likes of Messi, Neymar and Mbappé they were still eliminated at the Round of 16 stage losing out 3-0 to Bayern Munich on aggregate.

The summer was always going to be an interesting one in Paris and despite the never-ending Mbappé saga at the club, he remains a PSG player for this season, which means he wasn’t following Messi or Neymar out the exit door along with other notable departures like Ramos and Wijnaldum. In typical PSG fashion though they only went and signed thirteen players again including Asensio (Free), Ramos (Loan) Dembele (€45 million) and Kolo Muani (€95 million).

PSG have started their season slowly, they only occupy fifth place in the league with seven games played having won three times, been defeated three times and drawing on one occasion. However, on their day they’re still potentially unplayable and a 2-0 opening night victory over Borussia Dortmund means they currently top Group F.
