Claire Byrne Favourite To Be Next RTÉ Presenter To Leave

The end could be in sight for some of RTÉ’s biggest names as BoyleSports make Claire Byrne its 2/1 favourite to be the next star out the door at Montrose.

Shortly following the news of a pay cap at RTÉ it was announced that Ryan Tubridy would be joining Virgin Radio UK. Tubridy was of course at the centre of an RTÉ pay scandal this summer which saw him leave the company.

The former Late Late Show presenter was not out of work for long as Virgin Radio snapped him up this December. The move wasn’t a massive surprise as there were many rumours beforehand that Tubridy would continue his broadcasting career in the UK.

New Salary Cap At RTÉ

Now other star names could fall foul of new cost-cutting measures from Kevin Bakhurst, who has wasted no time ringing the changes at the national broadcaster since being appointed Director General at RTÉ in April.

News of a salary cap, preventing any pay packet exceeding €250,000, means many of RTÉ’s top stars are facing five-figure pay cuts with redundancies set to target those at the high end of the pay scale.

Claire Byrne revealed this year her salary has already fallen by €70,000 to €280,000 after leaving her Monday night show, but she remains among the top earners at the station along with Miriam O’Callaghan, who is also rated a likely RTÉ casualty at 4/1 with BoyleSports.

Top earner Joe Duffy, whose reported 2021 salary of €351,000 could be slashed by €101,000 under the new measures, is an 8/1 shot to be the next big star to cut ties with the station.

Patrick Kielty appears safe for now at 33/1 despite fluctuating viewing figures during his debut season in the Late Late Show hot seat.

Other big names at RTÉ that could be next out the door include Lottie Ryan (6/1), Doireann Garrihy (6/1, and Jennifer Zamparelli (8/1).

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

“The Montrose soap opera clearly has a few more episodes to be written and with redundancies on the horizon, it’s the big hitters like Claire Byrne and Miriam O’Callaghan who could see their relationships with RTÉ hit the rocks.”
