The Course
The Old Course at St Andrews on the east coast of Fife is a 7,313 yard par 72 with only two par 5s, two par 3s and 14 par 4s.

It has hosted the Open 29 times, most recently in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. We have some fresh breezes forcecast on Thursday and Friday and more moderate breezes on Saturday and Sunday.

It’s playing firm and fast and is browning over already. Pot bunkers lurk everywhere and while you may need to get to -16 to win, I don’t think the ‘Old Lady’ will be embarrassed as many are predicting.

It’s no doddle, you’ll need to be sensible, but having power in your locker will be more than useful.

Top Tip
Louis Oosthuizen is the only player to win The Open St Andrews since 1964 who hadn’t already won a major and my number one selection this week is Rory McIlroy.

It all started so well for him here in 2010 – he opened with a 63 and went 3/1 favourite, then he carded an 80 and said afterwards he couldn’t stay steady on the greens in the strong wind.

He shot 69, 68 on the weekend to finish 3rd, so it’s revenge time and this is such a good course for McIlroy.

Two of the four rounds at the Dunhill Links are played here and he was 3rd on debut in 2007 and has since posted three runner-up finishes in that tournament.

McIlroy showed when winning the Canadian Open that his wedge play has improved a lot, his approach play has really come on and he’s 8th in the PGA Tour putting stats.

His long-game at the JP McManus Pro-Am last week was phenomenal – he had two eagles in the 2nd round. His prep has been spot-on and the cream rises to the top at St Andrews.

Next Best
The main threat to Rory for me is Jordan Spieth. His Open record is superb – he was fourth in the 2015 Open at St Andrews, missing out on the playoff by just a shot.

He was also runner-up last year and relishes the creativity needed for links golf – he has a silky touch around the greens.

He warmed up well with a 10th at the Scottish Open last week, his Renaissance Club debut. A firm and fast St Andrews is a dream ticket for him.

Others
Another Open champion is Shane Lowry. Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo all won their second Opens at St Andrews and I suspect Lowry, a top-class golfer, could do the same.

Like Spieth, Lowry has magic hands around the greens and this will be a clinic of scrambling this week. He was incredible at Portrush when winning by six, he won the Irish Open on a links course as an amateur and there isn’t one part of his game that has let him down this year.

He was 9th at the Irish Open, 3rd at the JP McManus Pro-Am and wisely took a breather last week. He won’t mind the breeze.

Patrick Reed is the fourth major champion on my list and he has the bottle to win this. He has always courted controversy, but has never let it affect his performance.

He’s got his form back just in time to be a serious contender and it’s almost certainly down to equipment changes.

His partnership with PXG ended after less than six months and he has gone back to his old clubs. Straight away he finished 3rd on his LIV Golf debut in Portland, improving every day.

He finished 20th at St Andrews in 2015 in just his second Open start, then he was 12th in 2016 and 10th in 2019. He’s a Texan who plays well in the breeze and has a fantastic short game like Lowry and Spieth.
