A victory in the final major of the year would be McIlroy’s first major championship win in eight years, having last landed one of golf’s big four at the 2014 USPGA at Valhalla in Kentucky.

However, the Holywood man is going in buoyed by a strong run of form this year which has included top 8 finishes in all three major championships.

The each-way money is coming in spades for the likes of Jordan Spieth and Cameron Smith, who are both trending in the right direction in the lead up to tee off.

McIlroy, who skipped the Scottish Open last week, has been clipped into 8/1 with BoyleSports from 10/1 at the start of the week, making him clear favourite ahead Xander Schauffele.

The Olympic gold medallist and one-time Open runner-up will tee off as the hottest golfer in the field having won on his last three outings, including last week’s 36-hole JP McManus Invitational pro-am event and the subsequent Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club.

Schauffele has since shortened into 12/1 from 18/1 to break his major duck this week and leads the American charge ahead of Jordan Spieth and World Number 1 Scottie Scheffler, who are both 14/1 shots.

Recent US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick has been clipped into 18/1 from 20/1 to land a second consecutive major, while Australian Cameron Smith is proving a popular each-way pick and has gone 20/1 from 25/1 as a result.
