England’s 2018 World Cup Campaign

Group Stage

The Three Lions were drawn in Group G for the 2018 World Cup in Russia alongside Belgium, Tunisia and Panama.

Their first game came against Tunisia and it was a match that Southgate’s side dominated but they failed to reflect that dominance in the goals department. England fans might remember this as a very nervy game and it took a late injury-time Harry Kane winner for England to get the 2-1 win. That goal was Kane’s second of the game and it eased much of the nerves for the team as it meant that a win against a weak Panama side would all but secure safe passage through to the knockout rounds.

Panama provided little resistance against the Three Lions as they bossed the game from start to finish. After the first half England were already out of sight as they went into the break 5-0 up against the North American side. Harry Kane went on to score a third goal in the second half which earned him a rare World Cup hattrick. At the fulltime whistle England had won 6-1 and this booked them a spot in the round of 16 with their toughest group test against Belgium to come.

The Belgium game was an unusual game as there was very little incentive for either team to win the game. Adnan Januzaj scored what would be the only goal in the game to secure a 1-0 victory for Belgium but this did little to dampen English spirits as they were still through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Knockout Rounds

England’s first knockout game of the 2018 World Cup was their round of 16 game against Colombia. This was a tight fought game. Harry Kane put England 1-0 up from the penalty spot early in the second half only for Mina of Colombia to equalise with a stoppage time goal.

Southgate’s men managed to steady the ship in extra-time but neither team was able to score which meant penalties. England were able to win the penalty shootout 4-3 for what was the country’s second ever penalty shootout win at a major tournament.

Next up for England was a quarter-final tie with another European team in Sweden. England were in control of this game from start to finish and took the lead in the first half thanks to a Harry Maguire goal. Dele Alli doubled the lead after 58 minutes and the English never really looked threatened here for what was a comfortable 2-0 win in the end.

Croatia were the semi-final opponent standing between the Three Lions and a World Cup final spot. This was a tense game as World Cup semi-finals tend to be. England took the lead early thanks to a fantastic Kieran Trippier freekick. Ivan Perisic would later tie things up with a goal on 68 minutes.

The game went to extra-time as the teams couldn’t be separated after ninety minutes. It looked like we might see another penalty shootout until Mario Mandzukic scored the winning goal on 109 minutes to break English hearts.
