The Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Stadiums

Lusail Iconic Stadium

The Lusail Iconic Stadium is by far the biggest stadium at this World Cup and it can host a crowd of up to 80,000 people. It is located only a few miles north of central Doha.

The stadium officially opened in November of 2021 and is planned to be reduced down to a capacity of about 40,000 after the conclusion of this year’s World Cup.

There will be 10 games hosted at the stadium which is more than any other at the World Cup.

The Lusail Iconic Stadium will host the FIFA World Cup final on the 18th of December.

Al Bayt Stadium

The Al Bayt Stadium is located in Al Khor, Qatar. This is one of the more interesting stadiums at the World Cup as it has a retractable roof.

The capacity for the Al Bayt Stadium is 60,000 which makes it the second biggest venue at the tournament. Al Khor’s stadium was officially opened in November of 2021 and it has hosted the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup final between Tunisia and Algeria.

During the World Cup this stadium will host nine games with the biggest of those being a World Cup semi-final.

After this World Cup the stadium will be reduced from a 60,000 capacity to 32,000.

This is possible as the upper tier of seats is removable, and they are supposed to be given to poorer countries after this World Cup ends.

Khalifa International Stadium

The Khalifa International Stadium is located in Doha, Qatar and has a capacity of 45,416 making it the third biggest World Cup stadium.

The stadium was opened in 1976 and was renovated between 2014-2017 to bring it up to modern standards.

This stadium previously hosted the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup final between Liverpool and Flamengo.

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup it will host eight games with the most prestigious of those being the third place play-off on December 17th.

The Education City Stadium is another of the many stadiums in Qatar’s capital city of Doha. The stadium has a capacity of 45,350 which makes it the fourth biggest of the World Cup venues.

The stadium officially opened in June of 2020 and it has hosted a quarter-final at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup. In the 2022 FIFA World Cup the biggest match that it will host is a quarter-final on December 9th.

After this World Cup the venue will be used mostly by students from the surrounding areas.

The Ahmad bin Ali Stadium is based in Al Rayyan, Qatar and is also commonly referred to as the Al-Rayyan Stadium. The total capacity of this venue is 44,740.

The Ahmad bin Ali Stadium was officially opened in 2003 and was since rebuilt between 2016-2020. It has previously hosted group games in the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup.

At this World Cup the most prestigious match this stadium will host is a round of 16 game.

Al Thumama Stadium

The Al Thumama Stadium is located in Al Thumama, Qatar and can hold up to 40,000 people. It was officially opened in October 2021 when it hosted the Amir Cup Final.

This stadium hosted a semi-final at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup when hosts Qatar lost to Algeria. At this World Cup the biggest match we will see played here is a quarter-final on December 10th.

Al Janoub Stadium

The Al Janoub Stadium, also referred to by its former name Al-Wakrah Stadium, is located in Al Wakrah, Qatar. The stadium’s capacity is 40,000.

This venue will be the home of the Qatar Stars League’s Al-Wakrah Sport Club after the FIFA World Cup. The stadium was officially opened in May of 2019.

In 2020 this stadium hosted the AFC Champions League Final. In Qatar’s World Cup the most prestigious match we will see here is a round of 16 game between the winners of Group E and the Runners-up in Group F.

Stadium 974

Stadium 974, formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium is located in Ras Abu Aboud, Qatar. The capacity of this ground is 40,000 and it was officially opened in November of 2021.

Following this World Cup the stadium will be dismantled and the plan is to send it to Uruguay who are part of a bid to host the World Cup in 2030.

That would be some operation.

At the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup this stadium hosted a semi-final and the third-place play-off where hosts Qatar beat Egypt on penalties. In the 2022 FIFA World Cup the biggest match that this venue will play host to is a round of 16 game between the winners of Group G and the Runners-up in Group H.
