Republic of Ireland vs Northern Ireland Preview

Republic of Ireland Form

The Republic of Ireland Women’s Team are coming into this All-Ireland Derby Nations League clash following their first-ever World Cup appearance. During the tournament, they put up a solid fight losing out to Australia 1-0, Canada 2-1 and earning their first-ever World Cup point with a 0-0 final game against Nigeria.

However, since the tournament, there has been a lot going on off the field regarding the Women’s National Team. There was speculation before, during and after the tournament about the relationship between Vera Pauw and the squad.

Following the decision of the association not to renew her contract, what transpired was a scathing attack from some quarters which has people scratching their heads about what went on behind the scenes.

The rights, wrongs and grey areas will be debated until the test of time, but the reality is the team is in a new era now. Head of Women’s Football in Ireland Eileen Gleeson is in interim charge with a team including former Cork City manager Colin Healy and former WNT International Emma Byrne coming in.

There will be talk in some quarters that the comments made by Diane Caldwell, in particular, will put a lot of pressure on the team. However, the reality is they’d be expected to win this Nations League Group anyway and they’ll want to put up a statement performance on Saturday.

Northern Ireland’s Form

Northern Ireland are coming into this fixture following a quiet 2023. They finished their 2022 season after failing to qualify for the World Cup with a very respectable 1-0 victory against Italy to end their 2022 on a high back in November.

However, since that Italian victory, they have only played in three games this year compared with the Republic of Ireland who have played eight. They started their season with a 4-1 friendly defeat against Wales back in April before receiving another three-goal humbling this time 3-0 against Scotland back in July.

Signs look promising from their most recent game where they beat the Czech Republic 0-2 a side with several players at top European clubs. This Northern Ireland side are not to be underestimated.

Furthermore since that victory, on 1 September 2023, Tanya Oxtoby (41) was officially appointed as the new manager of the Northern Ireland women’s national team as she signed a four-year contract with the Irish FA. Oxtoby is a really interesting appointment having worked as an Assistant with Australia U20s, Scotland and Chelsea already in her young coaching career.

Key Players To Watch

Tyler Toland

Tyler Toland (22) played for Ireland 13 times from 2017-2019 before being exiled from the squad.

During the summer she signed for Blackburn Rovers Women and has immediately returned to the International fold immediately under the new management. Toland will have a huge point to prove in this game.

Rachel Furness

The Liverpool midfielder might be advancing in years at 35 but her international record for Northern Ireland cannot be questioned having scored 38 times in her 85 caps for her country.

Furness hasn’t scored an international goal since 2021 but is still a quality player playing deeper in the midfield.
