Rishi Sunak Backed To Replace Boris Johnson As Conservative Leader

Rishi Sunak’s credentials as a future leader of the Conservative Party are being backed exactly one year on from his appointment as Chancellor.

Saturday marks the end of turbulent first year in Number 11 for the MP for Richmond in Yorkshire, as figures released on Friday revealed the pandemic had contributed to a record annual slump of 9.9% in the UK economy.

Sunak insisted the GDP slump was comparable to other countries and a recent poll by the Daily Express suggested he is still in favour after coming out as the preferred candidate to replace Boris Johnson as Tory leader.

We have now also clipped his chances into 2/1 from 4/1, making him the clear front-runner to make the move into Number 10 ahead of 6/1 second favourite Michael Gove.

Sunak’s predecessor in the Treasury Sajid Javid has also come back in for support for the first time in over a year at 16/1 from 25/1 after he was linked to a return to the Cabinet as a potential Education Secretary.
