All To Prove For Constitution Hill

Former Grand National and Gold Cup winning jockey Robbie Power has claimed Constitution Hill still has it all to prove before he is regarded as one of the greats of the sport.

Nicky Henderson’s five-year-old is a 4/7 favourite for the Champion Hurdle in March after returning from his dominant victory in the Supreme Novices’ by coasting to a comfortable 12-length win in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle last month.

Honeysuckle The One To Beat

Power believes Honeysuckle is still the one to beat as the unbeaten mare prepares for her seasonal bow in Sunday’s Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse.

What Constitution Hill did at Newcastle was spectacular, there’s no getting away from that

Power told BoyleSports.

“To be honest I was sceptical about his Supreme Novices’ Hurdle victory. I thought the race fell apart and it was blown out of all proportion, but the form looks rock solid now. Is he the third best hurdler of all time? On ratings he is, but in my opinion, he is a million miles off it yet.”

“He has to go to Cheltenham in March and win a Champion Hurdle. Honeysuckle has two Champion Hurdles and is going for 17 wins in a row this weekend.”

How Constitution Hill Can Be One Of The Great Racehorses

“Douvan was probably the best horse I ever rode against, but he’ll never be considered a great because he didn’t go and win Champion Chases. Constitution Hill can do what he does at Newcastle and that’s great, but if he doesn’t turn up in March and win a Champion Hurdle, he won’t be a great.”

“In my eyes Honeysuckle is a great, she’s done it twice and until she’s beaten, I’ll firmly be in her camp. Everything that’s been thrown at her she has always answered. Maybe Constitution Hill will be the horse to beat her and if he does, fair play to him, but she’s been there and done it at the top level and Constitution Hill still has to get there.”

Nicky Henderson Speaks On Potential pre-Festival Meeting

Trainer Nicky Henderson this week refused to rule out a pre-Festival meeting between the pair in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown, but Power is hopeful that the anticipated showdown will be saved for the Cheltenham Festival.

“Hopefully the two of them turn up to Cheltenham unbeaten. It’ll be a great Ireland v England battle,” he added.
