Who won the 2022/23 Serie A?

The 2022/23 was the 121st season of top-tier Italian football, the 91st in a round-robin tournament, and the 13th since its organization under its own league committee, the Lega Serie A.

AC Milan were the defending champions having won their 19th title the previous season, however, it was Napoli who secured their third Serie A title on the 4 May 2023 following a 1–1 draw away to Udinese. Napoli won the title comfortably finishing sixteen points ahead of closest challengers Lazio.

Serie A 2023/24 Betting Favourites

Inter Milan

The Serie A favourites for the 2023/24 season are Inter Milan at odds of 9/4. The 2022/23 Champions League runners-up and third-place finishers in last season’s Serie A are expected to build on their excellent season by winning their 20th Serie A title and first since 2020.

Internazionale outperformed expectations last season, particularly in the Champions League where they lost out narrowly to Manchester City 1-0 in the final. Many expected that some of their star players such as Bastoni, Barella and Martinez would be coveted by the top European Clubs.

However, aside from the imminent arrival of their star keeper Onana to Manchester United as of now and the end of Lukaku’s loan, they have been able to maintain the core of their side.  Furthermore, the additions of Marcus Thuram, Kristjan Asllani and Yann Aurel Bisseck mean they’re likely to be even stronger this coming season.

Inter have an eighteen-point gap to make up for themselves and Napoli at the top of the table and while I expect them to close the gap at a minimum, Italian Football is far too competitive right now to take them at odds of 9/4.

Napoli

The 2022/23 Serie A winners have been installed as marginal second-favourites at 5/2 for the upcoming Serie A season to retain the title. They were dominant in last season’s Serie A with sixteen points between them and their nearest challengers Lazio to secure their third Serie A title and their first since the 89/90 season.

In the league last season they were in a class of their own but will be disappointed with their Quarter-Final elimination at the hands of AC Milan in the Champions League as many had touted them as contenders’ to go even further in that competition.

This Napoli squad has been strengthened further so far in the off-season so far retaining the services of Manchester United-linked Victor Osimhen and adding Raspadori and Simeone to what was an already exciting forward line. With that said, the loss of Kim Min-Jae in defence could prove difficult to overcome although they are linked to Mavropanos who would be the perfect profile player for this squad.

Napoli shocked a few with their performances last season but at 5/2 I think they remain a value bet even still.

Juventus

Next up in the betting for this season’s Serie A is Juventus who come in at odds of 7/2. From 2011-12 to 2019-20 Juventus dominated the Serie A winning nine successive league titles in an unprecedented level of dominance in a league which before that had been historically very competitive.

Last season they were hampered after a ten-point points deduction (which was originally fifteen) in the league for Capital Gains violations that saw Juventus finished in seventh position twenty-eight points off league winners Napoli.

Even had they not been deducted the ten points they would’ve only finished in fourth place behind Inter on goal difference and still eighteen points behind league winners Napoli.

For me, the gap between themselves and Napoli is far too big right now for them to be priced at 7/2. As it stands Weah is their only addition while they have lost players like Cuadrado, Paredes and Di Maria. Even if the rumoured signing of Lukaku comes in that still won’t be enough by my reckoning to secure this season’s Serie A title.

AC Milan

At odds of 5/1 for the 2023/24 Serie A title are AC Milan. This team won the league as recently as 2021 for their nineteenth title but their title defence went poorly last season with them only good enough to get fourth place with a seventy-point total. That total saw them finish twenty points adrift of winners Napoli.

However, their run to the semi-final of the Champions League shows that there is still a strong core to the team with Maignan, Hernandez and Leão more than good enough for most if not every other club in World Football.

They have lost the influence of Ibrahimović and top-class midfielder Tonali and while the additions of Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic will offset some of that burden, I don’t think this Milan squad is strong enough to win Serie A this season.

Others Contenders

Elsewhere José Mourinho’s Roma finished 27 points off winners Napoli last season and 11 points off second-placed Lazio but at 11/1 I think they remain a value each-way bet.

Lazio is going under the radar following their second-place finish and can be gotten at 12/1 while the always dangerous Atalanta are 20/1 to build on their fifth-placed finish last season.
