Super Bowl Betting Favourites
Kansas City Chiefs
The co-favourites to win the Super Bowl are the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs at odds of 7/1.
The Chiefs still find themselves as a co-favourite for this season’s Super Bowl despite a surprise opening night 20-21 home loss to the Detroit Lions. I wouldn’t be worried too much by that loss as the Chiefs were without the services of superstar TE Travis Kelce and suffered from a lot of drops in that game.
As long as quarterback Patrick Mahomes stays healthy Kansas City will be there or thereabouts come playoff time. Personally, I would have the Chiefs as favourites on their own and at 7/1 I think you’re getting decent value here given that this team has hosted the last 5 AFC Championship games.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are another co-favourite for the Super Bowl at odds of 7/1. The 49ers came into this season as one of the favourites in the betting and the nature of their dominant week one win against the Steelers in Pittsburgh has us thinking that they will be a major player for this season’s Super Bowl.
San Francisco made it to the NFC Championship game last year before they were beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles. That loss came in large part due to terrible injury luck at the quarterback position.
This Kyle Shanahan coached squad has established themselves as a powerhouse in the NFC over recent seasons having appeared in three of the last four NFC Championship games. Given the talent on this roster it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them make a Super Bowl appearance at the end of this season.
The concern with the 49ers for me is the quarterback spot. I’m still not quite sure how good 2nd year QB Brock Purdy is but this is such a talented roster that maybe it won’t matter.
Philadelphia Eagles
The third, and final, co-favourite for Super Bowl LVIII is the Philadelphia Eagles who also come in at 7/1 in the betting.
Week one saw Philly struggle at times against a determined New England side but in the end they were able to do just enough to leave Foxborough with the win.
This Eagles team was so close to winning the Super Bowl last year and figure to be in the mix again this season. Philadelphia even had a lead heading into the 4th quarter of last season’s Super Bowl but were unable to hold on as the Chiefs came back and ultimately won the game.
Like the 49ers, this Eagles team has an incredibly talented roster from top to bottom. However, unlike the 49ers, the Eagles have one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Jalen Hurts. The 4th year QB is a true dual threat with the ability to have success both passing and running with the football.
Hurts’ athleticism makes this Eagles offence almost unstoppable and I’d be surprised if we don’t see this Philadelphia team make it back to at least the NFC Championship game come late January.
The Eagles would be my pick at the top of the betting market even though I think the Chiefs deserve clear favouritism given that they’ve been there and done it a couple of times already.
Buffalo Bills
At 9/1 in the betting for this season’s Super Bowl is the Buffalo Bills.
Buffalo were the favourites for the Super Bowl for most of last season but struggled to recover from the loss of star pass rusher Von Miller in November. The Bills disappointingly bowed out of the playoff race after a 27-10 home loss to the Bengals in the AFC Divisional Round.
Week one of the 2023 NFL season was not kind to Buffalo as they fell to an opening week overtime loss to their division rival New York Jets. That loss doesn’t appear too bad until you take into account the fact that Jets starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers got injured early on in the game. In other words, the Bills were unable to beat a Zach Wilson-led Jets team.
With that said, I wouldn’t read too much into this loss for the Bills. They started off strong last season only to waver later in the year. It’s a long season so Buffalo fans will be hoping that the team can time their run a little better this time around by peaking later in the season.
One thing is for sure though, star quarterback Josh Allen needs to get back to his best form for this team to be considered a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals are next up in the Super Bowl betting odds at 10/1.
You never want to overreact to week one of the NFL season but the Bengals were downright terrible in their opening game against the Cleveland Browns. Cincinnati lost 24-3 in a game where they could only manage 142 yards of total offence.
The Bengals also got off to a slow start last season as they were 0-2 after their opening two games. Last year they bounced back from that slow start to earn a spot in the AFC Championship game where they came so close to beating the Chiefs and becoming the AFC’s Super Bowl representative for a second year in a row.
The odds here of 10/1 are about what they should be in my opinion. The Bengals, led by superstar quarterback Joe Burrow, should be there or thereabouts come the business end of this season.
