Super Bowl Betting Favourites

San Francisco 49ers

Super Bowl Odds

The San Francisco 49ers are the Super Bowl LVIII favourites at odds of 6/4 according to the latest NFL odds at BoyleSports.

Those odds imply that San Francisco have a 40% chance of winning this season’s Super Bowl.

San Francisco are 2/7 to make it to the Super Bowl with odds of 2/7 to win the NFC Championship. Those odds imply that the 49ers have a 77.8% chance of playing in this season’s Super Bowl.

Previous Season

The 49ers came into this season off the back of a successful 2022 campaign where they had a 13-4 regular season record which secured them the #2 seed in the NFC for the playoffs.

San Francisco eventually lost to the Eagles 31-7 in the NFC Championship game after an injury crisis at quarterback. They didn’t have any quality QBs to start the game and they finished the game in the same fashion after injuries to their starting and backup quarterbacks.

Key Players

Christian McCaffrey — Running Back

The best running back in the league in the eyes of most NFL fans and analysts. McCaffrey has been the key to this 49ers offence and should have been a bigger part of the MVP discussion.

The talented running back is not only a difference maker in the running game but also catching balls out of the backfield which makes him a nightmare to defend for opposing defences.

Deebo Samuel — Wide Receiver

While Samuel is listed as a wide receiver, the reality is that he means so much more than that to this offence. The talented pass catcher is frequently lined up in the backfield for San Francisco thanks to his frightening abilities with the ball in his hands.

The best indicator of how important the 28-year-old is to this team is how many of San Francisco’s plays are designed with the sole intention of getting the ball in his hands.

Fred Warner — Linebacker

Warner is the beating heart of this 49ers defence. The superstar linebacker is the best in the league at his position with the ability to sniff out runs and more importantly cover tight ends and even receivers in the passing game.

49ers Regular Season Performance

The 49ers were the class of the NFC in the regular season with a 12-5 record. They secured the #1 seed with a week to spare after a victory against the Washington Commanders in week 17.

There was some cause for concern however late in the season as they were dominated by Baltimore in week 16 in what could prove to be a Super Bowl preview.

Verdict

The 49ers are by far the most talented team in the league. The only thing that could stop them from winning this year’s Super Bowl is their deficiency at the quarterback position.

Despite a lack of talent at the sport’s most important position, San Francisco have all the other ingredients required to win a Super Bowl which could see them potentially overcome this limitation. Namely, the best play caller in the NFL in the form of Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, three future Hall of Famers in RB Christian McCaffrey, TE George Kittle and LT Trent Williams, elite receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk plus one of the best defences in the NFL.

San Francisco should have little problems in winning the NFC Championship and securing a Super Bowl berth but I do worry about QB Brock Purdy being good enough to get them over the line against either the Ravens or Chiefs in the big game. The young signal caller has shown a fondness for throwing the ball to the opposing team’s defence in between some impressive throws to his own teammates.

For these reasons, I don’t love betting the 49ers to win the Super Bowl at odds of 6/4, even if they have the most talented roster in the league.

Baltimore Ravens

Super Bowl Odds

The 2nd favourites to win Super Bowl LVIII are the Baltimore Ravens at 15/8 per the latest NFL odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that the Ravens have a 34.8% chance of lifting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of this season.

Baltimore are 8/13 to win the AFC Championship. Those odds imply that the Ravens have a 61.9% chance of playing in this season’s Super Bowl.

Previous Season

The Ravens had a record of 10-7 which saw them finish as the #6 seed in the AFC last season before an early playoff exit at the hands of division rivals Cincinnati. Baltimore were without the services of their star QB Lamar Jackson in that wild card game so it’s not worth reading too much into that playoff loss.

Baltimore’s 24-game preseason winning streak ended in the preseason after a last-minute loss to Washington. It was a heartbreaking loss for a team that seemed to care a lot about this preseason record.

Key Players

Lamar Jackson – Quarterback

Jackson will be crowned MVP of the league this season barring a shock. The 27-year-old deserves the title too after leading this team to the #1 seed in the AFC with not a whole lot of offensive talent around him.

Lamar previously won the MVP in 2019 and I’d argue that he is a more well rounded player now and a better passer of the ball. He’s playing the best football of his career at the moment and his rushing abilities makes him a nightmare to deal with for opposing defences.

Mark Andrews – Tight End

Andrews is one of the very best tight ends in the NFL. The 28-year-old is underrated for what he brings to this Baltimore offence both in his pass catching and run blocking.

The star tight end has been sidelined since November when he picked up an ankle injury. His return to the lineup should bring this Ravens offence to a higher level.

Roquan Smith – Linebacker

Smith began his career with the Chicago Bears where he was a star player. Chicago however did not want to pay Smith as he was entering the final years of his rookie contract and as a result he was traded to Baltimore.

The 26-year-old has been a shrewd addition to this Ravens defence. He is one of the best linebackers in the NFL with his strength lying in his coverage abilities.

Regular Season Performance

The Ravens finished the regular season with a record of 13-4. They were able to rest their starters in week 18 with the #1 seed in the AFC already secured heading into the final week of the regular season.

December wins against the LA Rams, Jaguars, 49ers and Dolphins saw this Ravens outfit go into the postseason as the form team in the league.

Verdict

They are the most in-form team in the league but will have to overcome Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the AFC title game to make it to the big game this February. Due to their tougher conference championship matchup, the Ravens are behind the 49ers in the Super Bowl betting market.

Odds of 15/8 appear fair to me. It also bodes well for them that they beat the 49ers, their likely Super Bowl opponent, 33 – 19 in December.

Kansas City Chiefs

Super Bowl Odds

Next up in the betting to win the Super Bowl are the Kansas City Chiefs at odds of 8/1. Those odds imply that the Chiefs have an 11.1% chance of winning this season’s Super Bowl.

Previous Season

The Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl Champions after beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38 – 35 in last season’s Super Bowl.

Key Players

Patrick Mahomes — Quarterback

Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL. He has 2 Super Bowls, 2 Super Bowl MVPs and 2 MVP awards to his name after 5 full seasons as the starter in Kansas City.

The Chiefs have made the AFC Championship game every season with Mahomes as starter including 3 Super Bowl appearances.

The 28-year-old is probably the most talented quarterback the sport has ever seen.

Travis Kelce — Tight End

Kelce is the top receiving option on this team by a large margin. At 34 years of age he is getting older and that age is perhaps beginning to show as he recorded less than 1,000 receiving yards (984) for the first time since 2015.

While he may be past his peak, Kelce is still one of the very best TEs in the league and continues to be the player that Mahomes trusts the most in important moments. His girlfriend is also a famous singer.

Chris Jones — Defensive Tackle

Jones is arguably the best defensive tackle (DT) in the NFL. The 29-year-old is the star of a much improved Chiefs defence and regularly causes havoc by creating pressure that forces the opposing quarterback to abandon the pocket or make a throw under pressure.

Chiefs Regular Season Performance

Kansas City had a tough regular season by their high standards. The reigning Super Bowl champions struggled down the stretch with losses against the Packers, Bills and Raiders in December.

The Chiefs finished with a record of 11-6 which secured them the AFC’s #3 seed. That was their worst regular season record since Patrick Mahomes took over as starter in 2018.

The biggest positive for the Chiefs this season has been their defence. In the Mahomes era the Chiefs have been a team with a high powered offence but average to below average defence. That hasn’t been the case this season as the defence has picked up a lot of the slack in games where their offence has struggled.

On that note, the biggest worry from a Chiefs perspective going into the playoffs is their inconsistent offensive performances. The big problem for Kansas City has been their receiving group who have dropped 2.6 passes per game. That is more than any other team in the NFL.

Verdict

I like the value of the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl at odds of 10/3. They have the best quarterback in the NFL and a much improved defence from previous seasons. The Chiefs are also one of the healthiest teams in the league at this stage of the season with all of their star players healthy.

The obvious flaw is a suspect group of receivers but Kansas City’s Head Coach Andy Reid is one of the great offensive minds in the game and between him and Mahomes I think it’s fair to bet on them overcoming this deficiency.

Detroit Lions

Super Bowl Odds

The Detroit Lions are 15/2 in the betting to win Super Bowl 58 per the latest NFL odds at BoyleSports. Those odds suggest that Detroit has an 11.8% chance of winning their first ever Super Bowl.

The Lions are 9/4 underdogs in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers which means they have a 30.8% chance of appearing in this year’s Super Bowl.

Previous Season

Last season was a promising one for Detroit as they improved from a record of 3–13–1 in 2021 to 9–8 in 2022. They narrowly missed out on the playoffs as the 8th seed in the NFC but it was their 8-2 finish to the season which really caught the eye and made them a dark horse in the NFC coming into this season.

Key Players

Jared Goff – QB

The former #1 overall pick has found a new lease of life in Detroit after the Rams traded him away in 2021 for Matthew Stafford who immediately went on to win a Super Bowl in LA. Goff has played like a top-half of the league quarterback since his arrival in Detroit and got his revenge on the Rams this postseason in a 24–23 wild card round win.

The Lions will have the advantage at quarterback in the NFC title game against the 49ers but Goff is a tier below the remaining QBs on the AFC side.

Sam LaPorta – Tight End

The rookie tight end has been one of the surprise packages in the NFL this season. LaPorta was selected by the Lions early in the 2nd round of the 2023 draft and went on to have a season that put him among the league’s elite tight ends in his rookie year.

The Iowa product is a favourite of QB Jared Goff and he will continue to be a big part of Detroit’s offensive gameplan in this postseason.

Aidan Hutchinson – EDGE

The star defensive end is a hometown hero having grown up in Michigan and starred at the University of Michigan before being picked by the Lions with the #2 pick in the 2022 draft. Since then, Hutchinson has quickly developed into a game wrecker on the defensive line.

The Lions have a pretty suspect defence but Hutchinson’s freak athleticism can cause havoc and create turnovers to keep this team in games.

Lions Regular Season Performance

Detroit lived up to the offseason hype on their way to a 12–5 record in the regular season. They went 3–3 against playoff teams with the highlight of their wins coming against Kansas City in the season opener.

The Lions went 4–3 in their last 7 games of the season which left question marks around their Super Bowl aspirations going into the playoffs.

Verdict

I think the Lions Super Bowl odds of 15/2, by far the longest of the remaining teams, tells you everything you need to know about their Super Bowl chances. In my opinion, Detroit are a good team but not a great team that is at the level required to win a Super Bowl.

The Lions have taken advantage of the weakest NFC we have seen in years. They are probably the worst team to make a conference championship game since the 2019/20 Packers. That Packers team lost 37–20 to the 49ers and I’m predicting that the Lions will be consigned to a similar fate.
