“There’s Too Much Racing In England, It’s Too Diluted” – Robbie Power

We caught up with our horse racing ambassador Robbie Power recently and he had some strong takes on the state of British horse racing.

Power also reveals the form of A Plus Tard after disappointment at Haydock, Minella Indo’s preparation and horses to keep an eye out for over the festive period.

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION ON THE STATE OF BRITISH HORSE RACING?

If you had no jumps racing on a Monday or Tuesday you’d have much better quality racing later on in the week and it’d make for better prize money too.

British trainers have too many options at the moment and if the options weren’t there then you’d have more competitive racing and that’s why I say there are too many days of racing in England.

If there was less racing in England I think British racing would be a lot more competitive.

HOW IS A PLUS TARD AFTER THE BETFAIR CHASE DISAPPOINTMENT?

He seems fine and is in good form at home. I think Galvin has to bounce back from disappointment at Down Royal and a few others have questions to answer. Hopefully, A Plus Tard can get back to showing what he was like last year at Leopardstown.

At Haydock he just wasn’t 100% on the day and that showed so hopefully he can bounce back in the Savills. It’s a very competitive and there are a few horses that have got questions to answer.

HOW HAS MINELLA INDO’S PREPARATION BEEN?

Minella Indo’s preparation has gone very well, he hasn’t missed a beat since he came back in. He’s in very good form and it’s a possibility that he could line up at Tramore on New Year’s Day. He’s got two options, really.

IS THERE A HORSE YOU PARTICULARLY LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHING OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD?

I’m looking forward to seeing Facile Vega over Christmas. He was impressive when winning his maiden hurdle, I don’t think there was a lot of strength in depth in the race but you couldn’t have asked for a whole lot more from a horse making its hurdling debut.

It’ll be very interesting to see what he’s like when he steps into slightly rougher waters.

ARE THERE ANY HORSES THAT HAVE CAUGHT YOUR EYE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF THE SEASON?

I thought Mighty Potter has been good and I look forward to seeing him the next time he’s out. He was a decent hurdler and I think he’ll make for a much better chaser – he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.

I also think I’ll be looking forward to seeing Gerri Colombe because he was very, very impressive when making his chasing debut at Fairyhouse earlier this season.
