WHAT’S A FULL HOUSE IN DARTS? WE EXPLAIN HERE FOR THE WGP

NAME THE SURPRISE PACKAGE AT THIS YEAR’S WORLD GRAND PRIX

Form goes out the window in these events and a lot of players struggle to hit the winning double, never mind starting with one so you have to take that into consideration.

Andrew Gilding will be going into it on a high having only just lost out at the Belgian Open.

WHAT’S THE TIE OF THE FIRST ROUND?

There are quite a few tasty games here. We’re looking at Dimitri van den Bergh against Dave Chisnall – it’s not a bad game, that!

Chisnall has all the attributes to dominate in darts. He’s got the right temperament and he could be the new sensation of 2022

Joe Cullen against Damon Heta, who is very steady and a very good player. That will be a cracking game. Rob Cross v Daryl Gurney will be a cracker. There are some beauties.

2021 CHAMPION JONNY CLAYTON’S CHANCES OF RETAINING

I’ve not met Jonny Clayton, but he seems a lovely chap. I always see the Welsh guys as being similar to Yorkshiremen through my county playing days against Glamorgan.

Clayton has all the attributes to win and will be in the top four but it remains to be seen if being the reigning champion will act as a monkey on his back or if it will give him the determination to secure a second Grand Prix win.

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN’S CHANCES OF WINNING

Michael van Gerwen‘s right up there with a chance of winning the title simply because he can hit form with the flick of a wrist but unfortunately, like Michael Smith, with his quick throwing style his form is always going to be fluctuating. It’s lovely to watch though and I wish I could’ve played like them.

GERWYN PRICE THREAT

Gerwyn Price can be anything he wants to be; he’s got the full package. He’s fit, has age on his side and there’s nothing stopping him from dominating the sport.

WHO WINS THE 2022 BOYLESPORTS WORLD GRAND PRIX?

It’s not like when I was playing when you could really pick a winner but it’ll be one of the favourites. You can’t discard Michael van Gerwen or Michael Smith.

Dave Chisnall also comes into the discussion now too after winning the Belgian Open.

I could rule Gary Anderson out of winning it I’m afraid. I think he’s at the end of his tether with darts.

I think Peter Wright will probably win it because it’s one on his CV that he is yet to win.

THOUGHTS ON DARTS RIGHT NOW – IS IT IN THE BEST SHAPE EVER?

Darts is the strongest it’s ever been. Previously, nine times out of ten, Phil Taylor would win tournaments and you had the same with Michael van Gerwen for a while, whereas now we’re sat here struggling to pick a winner for the World Grand Prix.

Everyone else has now caught up and can play to 100 averages. The reason why things have changed is that these top players are having stiff competition every week and when I was playing in the early 90s you’d go four months waiting to play top-class darts again.

Money has also changed the quality of darts. It’s a big drive for people to practice a lot more and that’s why we’re seeing the averages creep up.
