2023 Women’s World Cup Group E Preview, Predictions & Odds

In this post we have a 2023 Women’s World Cup Group E preview plus all our predictions and betting odds ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

Teams In Women’s World Cup Group E

United States

Vlatko Andonovski was named USA Head Coach on October 28th 2019, and has guided his side in sixty matches to a record of forty-nine wins, five draws and just six defeats, a win rate of 81.67%.

In 2023 they have been in excellent form with seven wins from seven matches scoring seventeen goals and conceding just one. They US qualified for this tournament by winning the 2022 CONCACAF Championship.

The 2019 World Cup winners will fancy their chances again at success this season with a star-studded squad, a winning mentality and experience throughout. If any side ends up beating them, they will likely win the 2023 World Cup. Lindsay Horan (29), Julie Ertz (31) and Alex Morgan (34) will all be crucial to success for this United States team.

Vietnam

Mai Đức Chung has been in charge of his country since being appointed in 2016 for his fourth spell as manager of the team. This will be their debut year at a World Cup, which they qualified for through their performance at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a playoff victory back in February last year.

They have had a busy 2023, albeit against considerably weaker opposition than those they will be facing at the World Cup, with a record of nine wins, three defeats and one draw. They have two friendly matches against New Zealand and Spain before their World Cup campaign begins.

While no superstars exist in the squad, really, a large amount of them come from 2/3 clubs, so expect a lot of continuity and knowledge of each other in this team. Furthermore, Captain Huỳnh Như has a solid record of 67 goals in 96 games for her country.

The Netherlands

Andries Jonker, on August 24th, was appointed as the new Netherlands women’s national team boss, replacing Mark Parsons, who was sacked after the team’s poor performance at Euro 2022.  Jonker’s contract is set to run until 2025.

In 2023 their record is three wins and two defeats, and they will be looking for more consistency if they are to go better than their runners-up finish in 2019, which was their best performance at the competition in what was only their third time partaking in the event.

I’m not solely convinced by this side, but they have some big talents across their squad, like Captain Sherida Spitse (33),  Jackie Groenen (28) and Lieke Martens (30).

Portugal

Francisco Neto has been in charge since 2014 and led the country to their first tournament when they qualified for Euro 2017. They qualified for the tournament as the Inter-confederation playoff Group A winners back in February, beating Cameroon.

In 2023 their record has been decent, with two wins, one defeat, and two draws, most recently a 0-0 against England.

I think Portugal could shock a few in this Group and tournament; my three to watch is Carole Costa (33), who has 153 caps to her name; Dolores Silva (31), who has 148 caps and Ana Borges (33), who has represented her country on 157 occasions.

Team To Win To Qualify
USA 2/7 1/100
Netherlands 5/2 1/14
Portugal 28/1 5/1
Vietnam 500/1 100/1

USA are 2/7 favourites to win Group E and are 1/100 to qualify.

The Netherlands are 5/2 to win the Group and 1/14 to qualify.

Portugal are expected to challenge the Dutch for second and can be gotten at 28/1 to win the Group and 5/1 to qualify.

Vietnam are not expected to get close to the other three and are 500/1 to win the Group and 100/1 to qualify from it.

Game of the Group

Netherlands v Portugal, July 23rd

Player to Watch

Alex Morgan (34), the American Superstar, has been at the top of the sport for well over a decade since making her debut with her nation.

She has scored 121 goals in 206 games, making her the top-scoring player in the USA Squad seventh in the All-Time Goal-Scorer list and fifth for the USA.  She shared the Golden Boot in 2019 and expect here to be close to it again this year.

Women’s World Cup Group E Prediction

1st – USA

2nd – Portugal

3rd – Netherlands

4th – Vietnam

USA are a classy outfit and heads into this tournament as one of the favourites to win it outright; expect them to lead the way in this Group.

When it comes to second place, though, I think it could get interesting, the Netherlands will be expected to qualify, but I can see Portugal pipping them to second to cause an early tournament shock.

Vietnam will concede lots of goals in this sroup, so much so they could bring goal difference into the group discussion.
